The Brevard Zoo is at a critical juncture as it seeks a deadline extension for breaking ground on the eagerly anticipated Bowen Aquarium and Conservation Center at Port Canaveral. Currently, the zoo’s deadline is set for the end of September, but to align with Port Canaveral’s deadline of April 30, a plea for more time is on the table. Missing the September deadline could result in a hefty loss of $15 million in grant funding from the Brevard County Tourism Development Council, which is supported by a 5% tourist development tax. This financial backing is crucial, particularly since the total cost of the aquarium is projected to be $100 million.

Brevard County Commission is set to cast its vote on this extension on August 12, just days before the current deadline of September 18. According to Brevard Zoo Executive Director Keith Winsten, although the extension is necessary to synchronize with Port Canaveral’s plans, the aim is to kick off construction sooner rather than later. The aquarium will cover 14 acres along the Banana River, with a strong focus on coastal conservation, environmental education, and marine species rehabilitation.
