Lady Lake, Canada - The excitement was palpable as the 2025 B.C. High School Sports provincial track and field championships unfolded in Langley from June 5-7, showcasing the impressive talent from seven schools in the Cowichan Valley. Athletes from Frances Kelsey, Queen Margaret’s School, Ladysmith, Quamichan School, Chemainus Secondary, Brentwood College School, and Shawnigan Lake School took to the fields, all competing for glory in various track and field events. The stage was set for stellar performances, and the young athletes certainly delivered!

Nestled in the heart of the action, Frances Kelsey High School made a strong impression. Nova Wedmann-Kent, a Grade 12 high jumper, turned heads by winning the silver medal in the senior girls category, an impressive leap from her bronze last year. Despite competing fiercely in the senior girls 100m and 200m, she unfortunately did not qualify for the finals. Young Charlotte Gough, a tenth grader, also shone bright, finishing third in the junior girls 800m preliminaries and fifth overall, while placing seventh in the junior girls 1500m preliminaries after improving from 10th last year.

Highlights from Other Schools

Queen Margaret’s School had its share of standout performances as well. Jessica Tshibangu flashed speed in the junior girls high jump, securing seventh place, while Cohen Bartfai finished ninth in the junior boys long jump after previously clinching second in the Grade 8 division last year. Mike Chen, despite struggling, made it to the senior boys triple jump finals, placing 19th.

Ladysmith Secondary’s William Cram left a mark on the championships with a silver medal in the junior boys 800m final after finishing first in the preliminaries. He also took sixth overall in the junior boys 400m race. Meanwhile, Lila Jeffries and Lina Anh Chay represented the junior girls in the hammer throw and javelin finals, respectively.

Brentwood College School had Ava Heenan flying the flag, participating in both the senior girls 400m dash and hurdles. Although she placed ninth in the hurdles preliminaries and 21st in the 400m dash preliminaries, she surely gained valuable experience in a highly competitive environment.

Not to be overlooked, Shawnigan Lake School saw Thabisa Mangena-Jellema place 11th in the senior girls discus and 21st in the senior girls shot put, showcasing her throwing skills and determination. Quamichan School had Tate McGeachy compete valiantly in the Grade 8 boys 400m dash, placing 16th in the preliminaries, while Chemainus Secondary’s Iza Durante finished 11th in the 400m dash preliminaries.
