Washington, D.C., USA - On July 4, 2025, the spirit of patriotism echoed through the streets of Washington, D.C., as two high school marching bands from Broward County proudly represented Florida in the National Independence Day Parade. The Somerset Academy Panther Marching Band, reigning state champions, delivered a memorable performance along Constitution Avenue, drawing cheers as they marched past iconic landmarks like the White House and the Washington Monument. This prestigious invitation marks the band’s second appearance in the national parade, a testament to their outstanding achievements over the years.

“This honor recognizes the hard work and dedication these students have shown throughout the year,” noted Ed Miller, the assistant principal of Somerset Academy. Band Director Tatiana Rodriguez echoed this sentiment, describing the experience as magical and expressing immense pride in representing the school on such a grand stage. “It was an incredible experience for our students,” she said.

Building a Legacy

The Somerset Academy Panther Marching Band, established back in August 2009 by Rodriguez, has transformed remarkably since its inception as a small pep band for football games. Thanks to the high interest from students, it has blossomed into a robust full-fledged marching band with a membership ranging from 70 to 90 students in grades 6 through 12. The band has not only entertained at school events but has also excelled in competitive environments, clinching the Class 3A State Marching Band Championships in both 2023 and 2024. Their performances have consistently earned “Superior” ratings from the Florida Band Association, along with first-place finishes at local competitions.

One of their standout performances includes „Echoes of the Blues,“ which garnered top honors at Park Vista High School. The pride of Somerset Academy, they have fostered a culture of support and dedication, creating lasting friendships among students while nurturing personal growth. Alumni like Rebeca Garcia often speak of how their experiences in the band helped shape their confidence and career aspirations.

Community and Preparation

To prepare for the Fourth of July parade, the Panther Marching Band engaged in rigorous rehearsals and community fundraising activities through platforms like InstaRaise, alongside local sponsorships. As they refined their patriotic medleys and drumline cadences, the students exemplified commitment, managing to balance their academic responsibilities with music practices. Community support played a crucial role in their preparations, allowing their passion for music to flourish.

The inclusion of the South Plantation High School marching band in the parade further highlighted the day’s festivities. Both bands brought a taste of Florida’s vibrant music culture to the nation’s capital, showcasing not just their skills, but the values of teamwork and perseverance that marching bands instill in their members.

More Than Just Music

Marching bands are not merely about performing; they symbolize school spirit and tradition, embodying the heart of community connection. Parades, in particular, provide a platform for bands to engage with their communities and foster pride through shared experiences. According to Music Celebrations, these events require a myriad of skills, from marching to playing while moving, and adaptability to varying environments. Such challenges enhance musicianship, while extensive planning and coordination foster leadership and organizational skills.

The journey through marching band instills resilience, discipline, and a sense of camaraderie among members. Overcoming the hurdles of rigorous rehearsal schedules not only builds confidence but also contributes to personal growth that extends well beyond the music itself.

As the sun set on July 4, 2025, Somerset Academy and South Plantation High School’s bands had left an indelible mark on the national celebration. Their performances are a shining example of how dedication to music can uplift communities, inspire youth, and create unforgettable moments on the grandest of stages.
