Kindergarteners in Boca Raton Discover the Thrills of Lineworker Day!
August 26, 2025, was not just another day at Limestone Creek Elementary in Boca Raton. On this special occasion, kindergarteners were treated to a unique experience as an FPL lineworker visited their school, bringing along a bucket truck and a delightful robot dog. This visit was part of Florida’s Lineworker Appreciation Day, an annual tribute established by the Florida House of Representatives in 2012 to honor the unsung heroes who tirelessly maintain our electricity networks.
Kellen Lewis, the lineworker who engaged with the children, observed the children’s excitement as they learned about the vital role that lineworkers play in ensuring reliable electricity delivery. Maria Lloyd, the principal of Limestone Creek Elementary, echoed this sentiment, noting how much the students enjoyed the visit and the valuable lessons they gleaned about safety and the everyday duties of lineworkers.
Communities Coming Together
The day was truly a celebration, not just for those at the school but for communities across Florida. The Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) and Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) organized festivities that lasted nearly a month, culminating in the special day. The initiative highlighted not just the hard work of the approximately 1,000 lineworkers employed throughout the state but also the commitment to safety that defines this profession. Florida lineworkers faced various weather challenges to ensure residents remain safe and connected.
Jacob Williams, FMPA’s General Manager and CEO, expressed his gratitude, emphasizing the dedication of lineworkers in restoring power during outages. This appreciation is not limited to local workers; more than 600 restoration personnel from other states were recognized for their assistance during Hurricane Michael’s aftermath. It’s a community effort to keep everything running smoothly.
A Social Media Outpouring
Additions to the celebration this year included a social media campaign aimed at raising awareness about the crucial work that lineworkers do. Features on FMEA and FMPA’s social channels offered up a mix of videos, photos, and testimonials that recognized lineworkers‘ contributions to public safety, team spirit, and the technical challenges they face each day. Community members were encouraged to join in by sharing messages of thanks using hashtags like #ThankALineman and #LineLife.
This approach not only acknowledged the skills of lineworkers but also engaged the public in appreciating their service. The campaign ran throughout August, engaging followers and even encouraging them to consider linework as a viable career path.
As our communities continue to grow and change, recognizing those who maintain the backbone of our electrical infrastructure is indeed more relevant than ever. Thanks to initiatives like Florida Lineworker Appreciation Day, lineworkers receive the appreciation they deserve, ensuring that residents across the state can enjoy reliable electricity for years to come.
With this ongoing acknowledgment, there’s something to be said for the value of teamwork and the vigil that lineworkers keep in our communities. As Kellen Lewis observed, it’s not just about the equipment; it’s about the people who keep the lights on, often risking their safety to ensure ours. Hats off to them!
