These innovations are part of a broader effort to enforce school zone safety and protect children during peak hours when they are arriving and leaving school.

Revamped Safety Protocols

The new educational laws for this year—18 in total—transform how schools manage safety from the ground up. Interestingly, new protocols limit perimeter and door security access to a 30-minute window before and after school hours. In times of crisis, temporary door locks are now permitted during active assailant incidents, ensuring swift reactions to threats. Moreover, substitute teachers will now be required to undergo safety training, reflecting a growing awareness of the crucial role that safety plays in educational settings.

To further bolster school security, the Florida Institute of School Safety has been established as a hub for ongoing safety upgrades. Firearm detection dogs will also make their debut in schools, aiming to create a safer learning environment. Health measures are equally pivotal this year, mandating that all schools have Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and glucagon available for diabetic emergencies. Additionally, human trafficking prevention training is now obligatory for all school personnel, marking a comprehensive approach to student health and safety.

Classroom Learning Advances

A statewide ban on cell phone usage during instructional time is now in effect, with exceptions for specific situations.
