ReadyKids! Expands ReadingPals to Help 300 Kids in Escambia County

Escambia County, Florida, USA - In an exciting development for early childhood education in Escambia County, ReadyKids! has been awarded a $50,000 CAREs grant from the Escambia Children’s Trust. This funding is aimed at expanding the successful ReadingPals program, allowing it to reach another elementary school in the region. With this expansion, a total of nine schools will participate in the initiative, which is set to serve 300 Pre-K children in the 2025–26 school year, as PNJ reports.

ReadingPals pairs trained volunteers with Pre-K students to provide crucial one-on-one mentoring. This program is not just about boosting literacy; it also significantly enhances children’s social-emotional skills. In Escambia County, nearly half of the incoming kindergarteners are underprepared for school, making initiatives like ReadingPals all the more essential. Last year’s statistics certainly paint a positive picture: 98% of children in the program enjoyed academic gains, while all participants showed improvements in behavior and emotional well-being, reflecting the program’s profound impact.

Community Involvement and Support

ReadingPals volunteers dedicate about 45 minutes each week to work with pre-kindergarten students from Escambia County Public Schools. These sessions are filled with interactive activities designed to foster decision-making skills and creativity. Volunteers receive themed literacy kits and books to use during their sessions, engaging the children in meaningful ways. Each of these young learners is gifted a new book monthly, complete with discussion prompts that encourage family interaction, as noted by ReadyKids.

The importance of early intervention cannot be overstated. Research shows that children who do not read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to leave school without graduating. Since its inception in 2011, over 30,000 students have benefited from a mentor through ReadingPals, and more than 530,000 take-home books have been distributed. PenAir Credit Union is currently accepting applications for its 2025-2026 NOW financial fitness competition, where three households can win valuable financial coaching and a grand prize of $10,000. The Florida Veterans Support Line is collaborating with local entities to assist veterans by providing informational events about benefits and resources.
