Teens Unite to Bring Comfort: $30,000 Raised for Hospital Therapy Dog
In an inspiring display of community spirit, a group of teens from Escambia and Santa Rosa County, known as Angels In Our Midst, have come together to raise funds for a therapy dog at Sacred Heart Hospital Children’s Hospital. Part of the Sacred Heart Foundation Change Makers Junior Board, these 17 dedicated students have turned their compassion into action, aiming to enhance the experience of young patients undergoing treatment.
After months of fundraising efforts, including lemonade stands, change collection boxes at local businesses, and a spirited ‚Raise the Rough‘ event at a local gym, the efforts culminated in the introduction of a therapy dog named Birdie. This furry companion is set to join the pediatric surgery team, helping to comfort children and make their hospital experience more bearable. The group successfully raised $30,000 to ensure that Birdie can fulfill this important role, proving that when the youth rally together, they can make a substantial difference in their community.
Beyond the Basics: The Role of Therapy Dogs
What drives such initiatives? According to Nemours Children’s Hospital, therapy dogs play a crucial role in enhancing the hospital experience for both patients and their families. These furry helpers provide comfort, support during medical procedures, and a calming presence during distressing moments. Their involvement can alleviate anxiety post-surgery, while also encouraging patients during therapy sessions.
The program not only includes certified therapy dogs but also clinically trained facility dogs, specifically bred and raised for this very purpose. Each dog undergoes rigorous training for over a year and a half before being matched with a hospital and handler. As a result, their presence offers crucial psychosocial support for patients, families, and medical staff alike.
Training for a Rewarding Role
As with any capable team, training is essential. Thinking Outside the Cage highlights the comprehensive process for turning a pet into a certified therapy dog. It begins with a behavior evaluation, followed by volunteer orientations and workshops designed to develop the essential skills for effective visits. Notably, humans accompanying the therapy dog must be at least 13 years old and complete the same training.
In addition to enhancing the bond between dog and handler, the training involves hands-on sessions at local facilities, ensuring that both parties are well-prepared for the challenges and joys of therapy work. This preparation not only benefits the patients but enriches the lives of the volunteers as well.
Now, with Birdie stepping into the supportive role at Sacred Heart, these teen volunteers are already planning their next fundraising mission. Their goal is to provide a swaddle for every baby born this year, highlighting their commitment to promoting safe sleep for infants. It’s clear that the passion and energy of this group can only lead to more positive changes in the community.
In an age when many might say that the youth are disengaged, the Angels In Our Midst prove that there’s still something to be said for young people’s ability to come together for a cause. They remind us all that when we support one another, everyone benefits. And who knows? Birdie may just be the first of many furry friends bringing hope and healing to those in need.
