Participants will also work with a case manager to facilitate scheduling any needed follow-up mammograms, with all follow-up care covered by PFBCC.

Reaching Underserved Communities

Those who’ve not pre-qualified should bring a photo ID, Social Security Card or ITIN, and proof of household income. PFBCC is far from an unknown entity; since its inception in 2004, the organization has assisted over 13,500 residents and funded more than 20,000 breast care procedures at no cost to clients. Remarkably, it does not rely on any federal, state, county, or city funding, with all resources raised from within the community. This speaks volumes about the local commitment to ensuring every woman has access to vital health services.

The Importance of Breast Screening

Breast cancer remains the second most common cancer among women, extending across various demographics. Unfortunately, women with lower socioeconomic status, particularly Black and Hispanic women, often face more severe health challenges, including advanced-stage diagnoses. Studies indicate that lower screening mammography rates correlate with poorer outcomes in these populations, making initiatives like the Breast Health Caravan all the more crucial.

Mobile mammography units (MMUs) have been instrumental in addressing access issues since the 1970s, showing effectiveness in reaching underserved populations who otherwise might not have easy access to necessary screenings. Programs from diverse locations, including Indian reservations and urban centers, demonstrate the growing need for these services. The CDC highlights these innovative outreach efforts, which have successfully utilized mobile mammography to touch the lives of women in various communities.

Despite the progress, barriers remain. Economic, cultural, and linguistic challenges still hinder many women from seeking care. Notably, the COVID-19 pandemic caused substantial delays in screenings, emphasizing the need for initiatives like PFBCC’s caravan to close the gap in breast cancer care. Regular screenings lead to earlier detection and ultimately improve survival rates, presenting an essential opportunity for women to safeguard their health.

The evidence shows that increased access through community outreach and support can significantly enhance participation rates among underserved women. Programs across the striking landscape of the U.S. and abroad bolster the resolve that effective mobile health services make a difference in battling breast cancer.

This August, let’s come together as a community to support women in need. With the Breast Health Caravan, we have a chance to change lives and futures—there’s something worth taking a closer look at! For additional details about the event and available services, visit PFBCC.org.
