Brevard County Boosts Community with $572K in Grants for Arts and Sports

In an exciting development for sports and arts enthusiasts alike, Brevard County has recently approved a generous funding package amounting to over $572,000 for 42 local organizations and events. This funding comes from the county’s 5% tourist development tax on hotel and vacation rentals, ensuring that the community continues to thrive through culture and sports. The County Commission’s decision, solidified during their meeting on August 12, reflects a commitment to fostering tourism and supporting organizations that draw in visitors from outside the county. The recommendations were made by the Brevard County Tourist Development Council, paving the way for this vital financial support.

The grants are designed to cover event-related expenses and are aimed at activities that not only enrich our community but also pack a punch economically through participant spending. The focus on these events ties directly into Brevard County’s broader strategy of promoting tourism as a key economic driver.

Funding Distribution and Recipients

A total of 18 grants aimed at the arts and cultural sector received $325,000. It’s important that these organizations show their impact on tourism by generating significant out-of-county visitors. Out of the applicants, nine did not meet the visitor requirement, two withdrew, and three chose not to apply this year. Notable recipients include:

  • $45,000 each to the Cocoa Beach Air Show and Thunder on Cocoa Beach.
  • $22,500 awarded to the Space Coast State Fair.
  • $17,500 each for Brevard Regional Arts Groups, Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, Museum of Dinosaurs and Ancient Cultures, Titusville Playhouse, and Valiant Air Command.
  • $12,500 each for organizations like the Brevard Symphony Orchestra and Cocoa Village Main Street.

Shifting gears to the sports scene, 24 events received a total of $247,665 in grants. Funding here was based on the hotel and vacation rental room nights generated, with a minimum requirement of 250 room nights. Each room night generated results in a grant of $15, with organizations receiving a maximum of $25,000. Standout grant recipients include:

  • $25,000 for the Bless the Babies Bowl, Cocoa Beach Spring Training, and Space Coast Spring Games Softball.
  • $23,145 for the Space Coast Cup Soccer.
  • $20,490 for the Florida Marathon.
  • $16,905 for the Cocoa Beach Half-Marathon and 10K.

Community Support and Future Allocations

To further support initiatives, each of the five County Commission district offices will receive $20,000 to allocate to organizations that didn’t meet attendance thresholds. This aspect ensures that even smaller groups get a financial helping hand, pending future approval from the full County Commission.
