Lake County, USA - The basketball community is grieving the loss of former Florida State standout Ryan Reid, who passed away at the age of 38. He played for the Seminoles from 2006 to 2010, where he gained recognition for his formidable defensive skills and leadership on the court. Reid was a significant part of Leonard Hamilton’s early years at FSU, contributing to the program’s resurgence, including a critical role on the team that ended a decade-long NCAA tournament absence in 2009. His death was announced by the French basketball club SLUC Nancy Basket, where Reid was recently playing professionally.

Current FSU head coach Luke Loucks, who was Reid’s teammate from 2008 to 2010, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media. Loucks described Reid as “a great competitor, trusted teammate, natural leader, devoted husband, and loving father.“ He expressed gratitude for their shared experiences and noted Reid’s large presence both physically and in spirit, underscoring his humor and ability to uplift others during tough times, as well as his impact on everyone around him. “[Ryan] was known for his ability to uplift others,” Loucks remarked, returning to their days on the court.

A Solid Contribution

During his college career, Reid appeared in 126 games and made 66 starts, averaging 6.8 points per game. He was recognized as one of the best defensive forwards in the country, often taking on the challenge of guarding top scorers from opposing teams. He led the team as captain in his senior year, showcasing his leadership skills and dedication, which ultimately helped the Seminoles achieve 88 wins, culminating in back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.

In the 2010 NBA Draft, Reid was selected 57th overall by the Indiana Pacers, who later traded his rights to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He played five games during the 2011-2012 NBA season, where he recorded eight points and two rebounds. After the NBA, Reid continued his professional career internationally, showcasing his skills in various leagues across Puerto Rico, Canada, Japan, and France.

Remembering Ryan Reid

Reid’s passing has left a large void in the lives of those who knew him. As Loucks emphasized, he was not only a talented athlete but also a devoted husband and loving father, embodying the spirit of camaraderie that is essential in sports. The Seminoles community will remember him not just for his stats on the court, but for his character off it. His legacy as a leader and friend will surely endure among teammates and fans alike.

The loss of Ryan Reid is a reminder of the deep connections forged in collegiate athletics and the impact one individual can have on the lives of so many. As the basketball world mourns, characters like Reid remind us that there’s much more to the game than just competition; there’s heart, family, and enduring friendships that last a lifetime.
