Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, FL, USA - In an inspiring display of community spirit, the Great Big Backpack Build event organized by A Gift for Teaching filled thousands of backpacks with essential school supplies for students in need. Held at the Orange County Convention Center, this annual effort enlisted approximately 500 volunteers from nearly 30 local companies and organizations to prepare for the upcoming fall semester.

The initiative strives to provide 25,000 students in Orange and Osceola Counties with the materials necessary to succeed. Packed with notebooks, pencils, erasers, and other crucial supplies, these backpacks will soon reach students who often come to school without basic necessities. Jane Thompson, president of A Gift For Teaching, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that over 70% of public schools in Central Florida are classified as high-need, underscoring the urgent need for such initiatives. Many students arrive at school unprepared, and this initiative aims to change that narrative.

Community Engagement

According to A Gift for Teaching, the Great Big Backpack Build is part of their larger Ready For Back-to-School campaign. This year, a remarkable 15,000 new backpacks were packed by over 240 dedicated volunteers. These supplies will be distributed across more than 130 high-need public schools in the area. The ripple effects of access to school supplies extend beyond mere academic success; they also significantly impact student participation, self-esteem, and enthusiasm for learning.

Teachers, too, often find themselves depleting their own funds to ensure their classrooms are equipped. According to reports on various school supply donation programs, the financial burden on educators can be immense, making community-driven initiatives even more vital.

Ongoing Support and Events

The Back-to-School Drive runs from July 5 to August 10, encouraging companies and groups to register for supply drives. Highlighting the essentials needed, the campaign focuses on dry erase markers, notebooks, markers, loose-leaf paper, and colored pencils. Mark your calendars for the live Back-to-School Telethon scheduled for August 18, where generous donors can double contributions thanks to matching funders. Every dollar can stretch to provide up to $20 worth of supplies during the telethon.

Last year alone, A Gift for Teaching distributed more than $9 million worth of free educational resources to local educators and students, with one-third of those supplies coming through the Ready For Back-to-School campaign. Such initiatives have become a lifeline for schools struggling to meet their community’s educational needs.

The Bigger Picture

Beyond this local effort, similar organizations across the country are pouring their hearts into ensuring that students have the supplies they need. Programs like Kids In Need Foundation, AdoptAClassroom.org, and DonorsChoose are working tirelessly to break down the barriers that prevent children from participating fully in their education. As highlighted in a recent piece by Better World, these programs are vital in building confidence and promoting community support for young learners.

As we prepare for yet another school year, it’s clear that the act of giving is one of the most powerful tools our community has in shaping the future of our students. After all, when we equip our children with the necessary tools for success, we are not just filling backpacks; we are filling hearts with hope and potential.
