Miami International Airport, Miami, USA - Miami International Airport (MIA) has once again stepped into the limelight with the unveiling of a new mural titled „Wolfson Archives: Celebrating 40 Years of Collecting, Preserving, and Sharing South Florida’s Visual History.“ This vibrant exhibition can be spotted at the Concourse E arrivals level near Door 11, pre-security, and will be on display until September. It’s an eye-catching blend of art and history just waiting to greet travelers and locals alike.

The mural is more than just a beautiful piece of art; it tells the compelling story of Miami-Dade County. Featuring photographs and video content from the 1920s to the present, it showcases a medley of home movies, travelogues, promotional films, and news footage. Among the highlights are cherished images of the original Miami Daily News building, the ambitious construction of the Flagler Railroad, the Miami Marlins’ historic World Series run, and the exhilarating Miami Grand Prix. Each piece captures the spirit and evolution of the region over the last century.

Honoring Local Treasures

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has sung the praises of the Wolfson Archives, calling them a treasured resource for the community. She recently congratulated the Archives on their impressive 40 years of commitment to documenting local history. Nestled at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives boasts a staggering collection of over 35,000 hours of videotape and 23 million feet of film, ensuring that the rich tapestry of Miami’s past is preserved for future generations.

This mural is not the only artistic endeavor in MIA. The airport continues to enhance its offerings with the CameraWork Gallery, featuring the exhibit „Connecting Concrete: Modernist Architecture from Havana to Miami.“ Displayed at Gates D22 and D25, the photographs, taken by Miami-based Cuban photographer Silvia Ros, celebrate the unique architectural heritage in both cities, showcasing structures designed by Cuban architects who fled the island after the revolution. It’s a clever juxtaposition of the cultural and historical narratives that connect Havana and Miami, with images from 2015 to 2023 highlighting significant sites like Miami Marine Stadium and the Nautical Club in Havana.

A Commitment to the Arts

The Miami-Dade Art in Public Places program, established back in 1973, has also been a significant player in enriching the local arts scene. This program commissions public art to elevate civic spaces and celebrate the community’s diversity. With over 1,000 artworks displayed across South Florida, the collection functions as a county-wide „museum,“ providing a platform for local, national, and international artists.

For those who are interested in getting involved, although MIA Galleries is currently not accepting proposals for new art, there are still opportunities for artists to stay engaged. By joining an email list, artists can receive updates on future opportunities, with open calls posted on Submittable for those looking to showcase their work. It’s a great chance to be a part of Miami’s evolving art scene.

As the new mural celebrates a momentous milestone for the Wolfson Archives and highlights the intertwined history of Miami-Dade County, travelers and residents can take a stroll through Miami’s memory lane at MIA. Whether it’s capturing the past or showcasing the present, the airport continues to be a canvas for creativity and culture.
