Mounts Botanical Garden, West Palm Beach, USA - The Florida Panthers have successfully brought together veterans and hockey fans alike in a heartwarming event that exemplifies community spirit and honor. Recently, at Mounts Botanical Garden in West Palm Beach, three local World War II veterans were honored as part of the Panthers’ ‚Heroes Among Us‘ program, which celebrates military service during every home game in Sunrise.

This touching reunion was organized by WPTV Anchor and Navy Veteran Mike Trim, creating a platform for the veterans to reminisce about their service and newfound enthusiasm for the sport. All three honorees, each aged 101 years, shared a palpable excitement over the Panthers’ recent back-to-back Stanley Cup victories. The atmosphere was electric, with fans chanting „bring the boys back,“ a nod to the star players Sam Bennett, Aaron Ekblad, and Brad Marchand, who re-signed in the wake of the team’s success.

Celebrating Heroes

During the reunion, veteran Richard Rossi from Port St. Lucie expressed his hopes for the Panthers to secure a third consecutive championship, while Sydney Edson from Lake Worth Beach mused that winning one more title could establish a hockey dynasty. This shared love for the Panthers has woven a new bond among the veterans, many of whom had not followed hockey prior to this year. Rossi, admitting he wasn’t a hockey fan until recently, said, „Have a sense of humor,“ when asked about the secrets to longevity.

The ‚Heroes Among Us‘ program, administered by the Florida Panthers Foundation since 2013, has paid tribute to over 500 military members, including more than 100 WWII veterans, through nominations from the community. Each honored member at a home game receives four tickets, special recognition during the National Anthem, and acknowledgment during a TV timeout. Notably, as detailed by the NHL’s official site, nominations require verification to ensure that only deserving candidates are selected to partake in this memorable experience.

Honoring Their Service

While the reunion thrived on the veterans‘ pride for their service, they remained humble about the term ‚hero.‘ Veteran Haworth commented that true heroes are the ones who did not return home, emphasizing the vulnerability and depth of their experience. Rossi added with heartfelt sincerity, “Real heroes wear dog tags, not capes,” highlighting a common sentiment among the veterans regarding their valor and the sacrifices of their fallen comrades.

Across town, on a different note, the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University has announced the creation of the Matt Caldwell Veterans Program. This initiative, named after the Panthers’ President and CEO, aims to support veterans transitioning into civilian life with educational resources and networking opportunities. Caldwell himself has a rich history, having served in combat in Iraq and participated in peacekeeping operations in Kosovo before becoming a prominent figure in professional sports.

Under Caldwell’s leadership, the Panthers have made significant strides in the hockey world, culminating with their historic Stanley Cup win. The initiatives launched at Kellogg promise to enrich veteran students‘ experiences while providing essential transitional support tailored to their unique skill sets. With $6.2 million secured for veteran scholarships, the program underscores a commitment to enhancing the lives and futures of those who have served.

As the Florida Panthers continue to inspire through their achievements and community efforts, it’s clear that both hockey and heartfelt recognition of service create a powerful connection. Whether it’s through the thrill of the game or through honoring the sacrifices of veterans, there’s something to be said for the unifying power of sports in our community.
