Major Upgrade at I-95's Sixth Avenue South: Improved Safety and Traffic Flow

Lake Worth Beach, Florida, USA - The bustling activity around Interstate 95’s Sixth Avenue South exit is turning heads as the two-year upgrade project continues to unfold. This ambitious undertaking, which began in June 2025, aims to enhance safety and ease of access for motorists in Lake Worth Beach. The completion date is set for the end of 2025, promising significant improvements to this vital corridor.

As detailed by the Palm Beach Post, the upgrades are quite extensive. They include the addition of a second right-turn lane from Sixth Avenue South to I-95’s southbound on-ramp, plus an exclusive right-turn lane for westbound drivers onto the northbound on-ramp. For walkers and cyclists, new 6-foot-wide sidewalks and 7-foot-wide bicycle lanes will make a noticeable difference in safety and accessibility.

Addressing Safety Concerns

Among the most critical features are the implementation of wrong-way driver detection systems and additional warning signs at I-95 entrance points. The system is designed to alert Florida Highway Troopers about any incidents, as the risk of wrong-way driving remains a pressing concern. A separate initiative by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is also in the works to combat these dangerous events. According to WPTV, the „Advanced Wrong-Way Driving Safety Improvements Project“ will modify 23 exit ramps across Broward and Palm Beach County. This project will include the installation of flashing beacons and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices to further enhance safety.

Data from the AASHTO Innovation Initiative highlights that wrong-way driving is a significant hazard. With an average of 432 fatalities annually from wrong-way incidents on controlled-access highways, these developments could not come any sooner. The initiative aims to reduce these events through improved signage, pavement markings, and innovative monitoring technologies that alert both law enforcement and drivers about wrong-way activity.

Current Conditions and Future Prospects

As the construction progresses, traffic has inevitably become a topic of grumbling among local commuters. Currently, all but two lanes on the I-95 exit ramps are closed, leading to frustrating jams during peak hours. For those traveling on Sixth Avenue South, one lane is still available in each direction under the I-95 overpass, but with faint lane markings, drivers are advised to merge carefully.

Pedestrians are facing detours as sidewalks are closed, making the situation even trickier for those on foot. Nightly lane closures from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. through August 31 add to the complications, but it’s all part of the road to rejuvenation.

The total cost for the Sixth Avenue South project exceeds $17.9 million, with a boost from over $5.8 million in federal infrastructure funding. Meanwhile, a separate $4 million project upgrading a segment of I-95 north of Sixth Avenue South is also underway, expected to wrap up this fall.
