He was traveling at approximately 65 mph at the time of the crash, just slightly above the posted speed limit of 60 mph on that stretch of highway. Gross, attempting to merge into the passing lane, also struck the alligator, leading to an unsettling series of events for both riders.

Following the collision, both Gilmore and Gross experienced significant injuries. Gilmore was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries that included notable road rash and a severe injury to his elbow, while Gross suffered a concussion, additional road rash, bruising, and a cracked wrist. Thankfully, they both credit their protective gear, particularly their helmets, for preventing more severe injuries. Gilmore, an avid motorcyclist for much of his life, and Gross, who only took up riding about four months prior, met at the hospital to share their experiences that dreadful evening.
