Frazer School Triumphs: National Math Champs with 255 Trophies!

Alachua, Florida, USA - In a remarkable display of mathematical prowess, Frazer School recently clinched the national championship at the Mu Alpha Theta National Convention held in Orlando. The team, consisting of 56 talented students, scored an impressive 7,283 points, outpacing the second-place American Heritage Broward by a comfortable margin of 106 points. This victory is not merely a testament to individual brilliance but highlights a remarkable team effort led by their dedicated math coach, Ziwei Lu.
The Frazer School math team distinguished itself by winning two of the four divisions—Theta and Statistics—and securing second place in the Alpha and Mu divisions. The competition included various categories, such as Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus, showcasing a broad spectrum of skills and knowledge. Additionally, the team brought home a whopping 255 trophies from the convention, demonstrating their dominance and hard work over the summer, which included participation in two math camps.
Divisional Triumphs and Individual Achievements
Among the standout performances, the Theta division saw exceptional contributions from Tony Lai, Maxwell Xu, Yifan Song, and Connor Guthrie, who together captured the Theta Division championship. Noteworthy individual achievements in Theta included Maxwell Xu’s victory in Theta Applications and Ajay Sawant’s success in Equations and Inequalities. Similarly, the Alpha division brought triumphs for Jonathan Lin in Matrices and Vectors and Aadya Guduru in Alpha Chalk Talk.
But the Mu division was not to be overlooked. Andrew Xing excelled in both Mu Applications and the Integration Bee, while Katie He impressed in Area and Volume as well as in Speed Math. These accomplishments not only highlight the students‘ dedication but reflect the supportive environment fostered at Frazer School, as Principal Fayiga noted the extensive preparation completed over the summer.
Mu Alpha Theta: A Legacy of Excellence
The Mu Alpha Theta organization itself, founded in 1957, has become a celebrated platform for promoting the enjoyment of mathematics among high school and two-year college students. With over 108,000 members in more than 2,200 chapters across the United States and 20 foreign countries, this honor society aims to nurture interest in mathematical scholarship. Its influence has been felt widely, inspiring competitions for decades, with its first national convention dating back to 1968.
In the world of math competitions, Frazer School’s recent win joins a legacy of achievement, including the remarkable performance of Buchholz High School, another Florida powerhouse. In 2021, Buchholz scored a record 900 points, securing a historic victory with the largest margin in the competition’s history. They triumphed in 31 out of 39 events, further asserting the dominance of Florida schools in these prestigious competitions.
As the Frazer team takes a well-deserved break before resuming classes on August 4, there’s a palpable excitement for what the future holds for these mathletes. With such talent and teamwork on display, it’s clear that the legacy of excellence in mathematics continues to thrive in our local schools.
