Beloved Navy Veteran Jack F. Hill Passes Away at 81, Leaving Legacy of Love
Newton Falls, OH, USA - Jack F. Hill, 81, passed away on June 3, 2025, at UH Geauga Medical Center in Chardon, after a life rich with experiences, from humble beginnings to serving his country during a pivotal moment in world history. Born on June 2, 1944, in Warren, Ohio, to Robert Ellwood Hill and Veronica Isabell Valent Hill, Jack spent a significant part of his life in Kinsman since 1983, after residing in Newton Falls. Throughout his life, he was known not only for his service and work ethic but also for his devotion to family and community.
As a young man, Jack joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He served from 1962 to 1965 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a tense confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union over the deployment of ballistic missiles in Cuba. It was a time when the world stood on the brink of nuclear war. Soviet Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev had secretly deployed missiles in Cuba to address what he saw as a strategic imbalance, and U.S. intelligence uncovered this deployment just before it became operational. President John F. Kennedy and his administration navigated this dangerous situation through a combination of military might and careful negotiation, ultimately leading to a peaceful resolution without escalating into a full-scale war.
A Life of Commitment
Jack had the joy of marrying Buelah J. Blevins in 1964, a union that was tragically cut short by her untimely death in a car accident just three years later. He later married Shirley A. Vickers on January 15, 1969, and they enjoyed a devoted marriage lasting 56 years. Together, they raised a family that includes a daughter, Jackie, and son, Steven, alongside stepdaughter Barbara and six grandchildren. Jack’s family was his pride and joy, reflecting the love and resilience that marked his life.
His career began in maintenance at American Welding & Manufacturing, where he worked for 28 years until his retirement in 1994. Following that, Jack spent 23 years at Walmart in Cortland, starting as a floor maintenance man and eventually taking on assembler duties. His dedication to hard work and community engagement made him a respected figure in the local area. He was also a proud member of VFW Post #3285 in Indiana, PA, and the Slovak Club in Warren, engaging deeply with the community through various activities.
Outdoor Enthusiast
Outside of his professional life, Jack was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and ATVing. These hobbies allowed him to appreciate the natural beauty of the region while also providing precious moments with family and friends. His zest for life was evident to all who knew him.
Jack leaves behind not just memories and stories but also a strong legacy of love and commitment. He is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Buelah, son Jack F. Hill Jr., brother Robert Hill, and stepdaughter Valerie Tyre. He is survived by his beloved wife Shirley, his children, siblings, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren — a testament to a life well-lived.
The funeral services for Jack F. Hill are scheduled for 1 p.m. on June 9, 2025, at James Funeral Home in Newton Falls, with Fr. David Merzweiler officiating. Family and friends are welcome to gather for calling hours from noon to 1 p.m. on the same day. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Newton Falls Cemetery, and a luncheon will be provided at the funeral home.
