Quilts of Comfort: Local Camp Brings Joy to Kids Battling Cancer

Fort Walton Beach, Florida, USA - In a heartfelt initiative, Ann Leonard has taken it upon herself to spread comfort to children battling cancer through the warmth of handmade quilts. Leonard, inspired by the cozy quilts she observed while chatting with her niece and nephew, has been volunteering at Rapahope, a summer camp in Mobile, Alabama, dedicated to children facing serious illnesses. The joyful atmosphere at Rapahope, filled with activities like fishing, swimming, dancing, and singing, aims to create a fun and safe environment for these brave young souls.

As Leonard immersed herself in this world of joy and laughter, she proposed the idea of gifting quilts to campers. Her idea quickly excited Karen McQueen, a talented quilter and retired teacher who spearheaded the effort to bring this vision to life. Over 90 days, McQueen and dedicated seamstresses from Fort Walton Beach worked tirelessly to sew 53 twin-bed-size quilts, each crafted with love and care. “We encourage anyone interested in sewing to join us in this effort,” McQueen stated, noting that they can teach anyone willing to learn. Plans are already underway for next year’s campers, with hopes to create 75 to 80 quilts!

Camps That Make a Difference

The efforts at Rapahope align closely with the mission of Camp Kesem, which is also dedicated to supporting children affected by cancer in their families. This free, overnight summer camp welcomes children ages 6-18, providing them with fun activities and a supportive community to help them navigate feelings of anxiety and isolation. Camp Kesem emphasizes that these children are not alone in their experiences, ensuring a safe, fun, and empowering environment for all campers.

At Camp Kesem, college student leaders serve as counselors, having undergone substantial leadership training to support their mission effectively. Furthermore, the camp employs nurses and mental health professionals to facilitate a comprehensive support system for both campers and counselors, helping to create a nurturing experience unlike any other.

Across the United States and even globally, summer camps for families coping with cancer provide essential respite for those navigating treatment.
