Tampa International Airport, Tampa, FL, USA - This summer, Tampa International Airport (TPA) is rolling up its sleeves for some much-needed runway and taxiway rehabilitation. In a robust commitment to maintaining high standards, the airport is tackling repairs on two of its three runways—1R-19L and 10-28—along with several associated taxiways. This extensive project aims to ensure that the airport meets Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards while continuing to provide a seamless travel experience for passengers.

According to Airport Suppliers, travelers will not be significantly affected despite the scale of the operation. Though temporary closures might cause slight delays, it’s business as usual with all flights continuing to operate. Ajax Paving Industries of Florida LLC has been contracted for this $13.2 million project, which is expected to extend into late fall.

What’s Involved?

The scope of this rehabilitation project is impressively detailed. As highlighted by Nelson Construction, the work includes the removal and replacement of about 4,000 square yards of 17-inch-thick Portland Cement Concrete pavement and the replacement of roughly 2,600 square yards of econocrete base. Other major tasks will involve repairing 400 linear feet of cracked concrete slabs, spall repairs covering 1,900 square feet, and resealing over 505,000 linear feet of concrete joints. Additionally, around 500,000 square feet of airfield markings will be remarked, ensuring clarity and safety for arriving and departing aircraft.

The project is projected to have a rigorous schedule, with multiple interim deadlines that might even include night work. The construction team is on a tight timeline but has a good hand at meeting all phasing deadlines, having completed prior projects on time and under budget.

Paving the Path Forward

This necessary maintenance doesn’t just keep the runways and taxiways operational; it also plays a critical role in adhering to FAA requirements regarding airfield pavement management. As stipulated in law amendments to Title 49, Section 47105 of the U.S. Code, sponsors are now required to develop and maintain effective pavement management programs (PMP). The goal of these programs is to ensure that pavement systems remain safe and operable at minimal cost, which directly translates into better experiences for travelers.

As detailed in the guidance from the FAA, an effective PMP should include thorough inventories of the pavement and regular inspections to monitor conditions. Timely maintenance is often more cost-effective than later repairs, thereby extending the lifespan of the pavement—and, in turn, the safety and functionality of the airport.

While the work at Tampa International Airport is significant, it stands as a proactive measure to ensure the facility remains a vital hub of activity.
