Tragedy Strikes: Wheelchair User Killed by Truck in Manatee County

Pearl Avenue, Manatee County, Florida, USA - A tragic incident unfolded in Manatee County on June 21, when a 64-year-old man in a wheelchair lost his life after being struck by a pickup truck. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is now investigating the circumstances surrounding this heart-wrenching event.

According to ABC Action News, the crash occurred around 10:53 p.m. when a 29-year-old man from Palmetto, driving a Ford F250, was at a red light on Pearl Avenue, situated east of U.S. 41. As the truck made a right turn onto U.S. 41, it struck the pedestrian entering the crosswalk at the northeast corner. The impact knocked the man to the ground, and the truck proceeded to run over him. Fortunately, the driver did stop at the scene to assist.

Growing Concerns About Pedestrian Safety

This incident underscores a disturbing trend in traffic-related fatalities, particularly involving pedestrians. Data from the MPO’s Destination Zero initiative reveals that almost 25% of all fatal crashes in Sarasota and Manatee counties involve pedestrians. Annually, about 25 to 26 pedestrians fall victim to these roadway mishaps. The roadway segment where this accident transpired belongs to a designated High Injury Network, which accounts for only 2.8% of local roads yet is responsible for nearly 44.8% of serious injury and fatal crashes.

In 2022 alone, over 8,000 pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle crashes across the United States, averaging a death roughly every 64 minutes, as reported by the CDC. This staggering data highlights the necessity for proactive measures to improve pedestrian safety, particularly in areas with high vehicle speeds and traffic volume.

Various elements contribute to pedestrian fatalities, including vehicle size and speed, as well as the condition of the roads. Notably, the CDC found that adults aged 65 and older accounted for 22% of pedestrian deaths in 2022, and roadways with speed limits of 30 mph or higher often correlate with increased risk. The fact that larger vehicles, such as SUVs, pose a greater risk to pedestrians should also not be overlooked.
