Progress Village, Florida, USA - In a disturbing trend, Hillsborough County is facing a surge in gun-related incidents involving teenagers. Recently, two teenage felons were arrested in connection to a shooting that injured another teenager in Progress Village, Florida. This incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. when the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls regarding gunfire in the area. Deputies arrived on the scene to find a teenager suffering from a gunshot wound. Thankfully, he was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, allowing for some semblance of hope amidst troubling events. Fox 13 News reports that detectives were quick in their investigation, managing to identify the vehicle associated with the suspected shooter and located it in Riverview.

The accused driver, Antonio House, 38, was apprehended for driving on a suspended license. Following his arrest, a search warrant executed at his residence uncovered multiple firearms, including a Glock .40 caliber handgun that was ballistically matched to casings found at the shooting scene. The situation worsened when evidence linked to the crime was discovered in a shared bedroom belonging to Jaheim House, 18, and a 17-year-old male. The latter was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and resisting an officer without violence. Meanwhile, Antonio House now faces multiple serious charges, including attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Sheriff Chad Chronister has expressed the Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to preventing violence in neighborhoods and ensuring that offenders are held accountable.

Growing Concerns Over Gun Use Among Youth

This incident underscores a broader issue: gun use among teenagers is on the rise, not just in Hillsborough but across the nation. According to a report from ABC Action News, incidents involving firearms among youths have become alarmingly common. In the past year alone, unintentional shootings resulted in 157 deaths and 270 injuries among children nationally. Here in Hillsborough County, the number of children arrested on firearm charges has significantly increased: from 201 arrests in 2022 to 221 in 2023, with 74 of those arrests already logged this year.

Real-life stories reveal the gravity of the situation. A 17-year-old boy reflected on his own brush with the law when he was caught with a gun in his backpack at school. After 21 days in juvenile detention, he participated in a gun offender program through Safe and Sound Hillsborough. His experience has been filled with regret, as he has taken to returning to the program to help others in similar circumstances. Such proactive efforts highlight how crucial it is for communities and individuals to engage in conversations about accountability and the realities of gun access.

Local Initiatives to Combat Gun Access

Safe and Sound Hillsborough is at the forefront of strategies aiming to prevent children from easily accessing guns. CEO Freddy Barton points out that a staggering 80% of firearms accessed by youths come from unsecured vehicles. This revelation invites parents and firearm owners to reconsider their storage methods. Barton urges firearm owners to lock up their guns securely and for parents to routinely check children’s backpacks and bedrooms for any dangerous items.

The initiative collaborates closely with the Tampa Police Department and recently secured a grant from the Department of Justice aimed at tackling the troubling increase in gun use among children. Coordinated responses are now more critical than ever, as both data and personal accounts illustrate how gun violence touches many lives in our community.

As Hillsborough County grapples with these issues, it’s clear we must come together as a community. Local leaders, law enforcement, and families must unite in their efforts to ensure that our neighborhoods are safe, preventing further tragedies that could irreversibly impact the futures of our youth.

Gun violence remains a complex challenge, influenced by various factors ranging from socioeconomic conditions to personal circumstances. As we reflect on the incidents in our community, let’s prioritize conversation, prevention, and, most importantly, the well-being of our children.
