Plans are taking shape for a new Buc-ee’s travel center off Interstate 75 in Ocala, Florida, as construction gains momentum. The Lane Construction Company has secured a nearly $240 million bid aimed at enhancing the I-75 corridor, and the initiative promises plenty of excitement for locals and travelers alike.

At the heart of this development is the new Divergent Diamond Pattern interchange at the 49th Street Interchange in Marion County. This innovative design, championed by Governor Ron DeSantis, aims to improve traffic flow and access to commercial ventures in the area, notably the future Buc-ee’s. In a press conference held in April 2023, DeSantis highlighted that this project will not only ease congestion but is also expected to create at least 1,500 new jobs in the region.

Big Plans for Buc-ee’s

The upcoming Buc-ee’s location is slated to feature an expansive 80,000-square-foot travel center, which will accommodate 120 fuel pumps and boast over 720 parking spots. This will be Buc-ee’s third Florida location, joining the established sites in St. Augustine, St. Lucie County, Daytona Beach, and Leon County. It’s worth noting that this new center will mark the first Buc-ee’s directly accessible from I-75, making it a highly anticipated stop for travelers along this busy corridor.

During the April press event, DeSantis brought a bit of flair to the proceedings by tossing bags of Buc-ee’s beloved beaver nuggets to attendees, adding a touch of joviality to the serious business of infrastructure development. The project also signifies a broader initiative to improve public infrastructure throughout the state, fueled by the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund, which allotted $4 million specifically for this interchange expansion.

Economic and Community Impact

As the project unfolds, its economic ramifications are substantial. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) projects a $21 million economic impact from the new interchange, with Ocala Mayor Kent Guinn estimating that the travel center will provide approximately 225 new jobs directly related to its operations. The funding for the entire project includes costs of $20 million for right-of-way acquisition and further expenditures amounting to around $59.3 million for construction, in addition to estimated design costs of $4.9 million.

Aside from the immediate job creation, the newly constructed auxiliary lanes along I-75 align with the state’s goal to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance safety. These improvements, part of the Moving Florida Forward Initiative, are anticipated to significantly reduce traffic crashes, with the diverging diamond structure being particularly favourable for traffic flow.

The groundbreaking ceremony for this expansion took place near the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing, where local officials joined DeSantis to mark this exciting milestone. Just imagine: not only will this venture make the highway journey smoother, but it will also play a pivotal role in community growth and development by connecting residents to jobs and services.
