Cocoa, Florida, USA - In a proud moment for the Cocoa Police Department and the community at large, Daniel Hernandez has officially transitioned from trainee to sworn officer. This milestone was marked by a ceremony attended by family and fellow officers, where Chief Evander Collier IV administered the Police Officers’ Oath, sealing Hernandez’s commitment to serve and protect.

At just 23 years old, Hernandez has shown remarkable dedication since joining the department in March. He recently graduated from the Criminal Justice Academy at Indian River State College on June 3, achieving a key stepping stone toward his career in law enforcement. Upcoming Training and Responsibilities

Hernandez’s journey into active police work is just beginning. He will undergo department-specific training that starts with an introduction to internal policies and procedures, emphasizing the importance of standard operational protocols. Following this orientation, he will be paired with a field training officer, which will provide him invaluable hands-on experience.

The Cocoa Police Department employs a rigorous Field Training and Evaluation Program that includes an orientation phase and four further evaluation phases, as detailed by the City of Cocoa. Each phase is crucial, varying in duration. For instance, the minimum orientation phase includes at least 80 hours, while the subsequent phases can range from a minimum of 120 to 140 hours, culminating in a final phase where trainees function as solo patrol officers.

  • Orientation phase: minimum of 80 hours
  • Phase one training: minimum of 120 hours
  • Phase two training: minimum of 140 hours
  • Phase three training: minimum of 140 hours

For those with prior experience in law enforcement, an accelerated program is available, allowing them to complete their training in a shorter time frame, demonstrating the department’s flexibility in accommodating various levels of expertise.

A Promising Future

Outside of his professional commitments, Hernandez enjoys an active lifestyle which includes playing soccer, working out, and spending quality time with his girlfriend and their two German Shepherds. His interests not only highlight a convivial personality but also exhibit the zest he brings to his role as a public servant.

As he embarks on this new chapter, the Cocoa Police Department and the community look forward to seeing Hernandez thrive in his new responsibilities. With a solid foundation of training and a supportive environment, there’s much to be expected from Cocoa’s newest officer in the days to come.
