Kissimmee, USA - Kissimmee is stepping into the spotlight with its vibrant public art scene, thanks largely to the ongoing “ARTisNOW” public murals project. The initiative is not just about paint on walls; it reflects a significant transformation in the city’s urban landscape. With nearly 30 murals gracing downtown Kissimmee, this project, led by Osceola Arts, has earned the city the 2025 Downtown Beautification and Innovation Award. As per MyNews13, the goal is clear: enhance the area for both tourists and residents while creating a lively atmosphere.

Public arts coordinator Brian Camacho highlights how crucial art is in expressing community identity. “Murals contribute to place-making and community gathering,” notes Samia Singleton, community redevelopment agency manager. This collaboration has tapped into the creativity of local artists and business owners since the project began in 2019.

The Drive Behind the Murals

Funding for the murals comes through partnerships with both the City of Kissimmee and Experience Kissimmee. Artists recently began their new round of mural creations, painting powerful themes of animal and wildlife that resonate with local culture. Marilyn Cortes-Lovato of Osceola Arts reiterates the significance of engaging community in cultural activities through art. “This year, we are aiming to transform and revitalize public spaces,” she adds.

Among the notable murals is one by Orlando artist Ryan Semple, showcasing the Florida Panther, an endangered species. It graces the east wall of Broadway Pizza Bar, drawing attention to both art and conservation. Other talented artists are also contributing their skills across various locations, such as Nicole Holderbaum at Kissimmee Jewelers and SLEDS at Lanier’s Historic Downtown Marketplace, as reported by Positively Osceola.

A Broader Movement

Kissimmee’s focus on public art contributes to a larger trend seen across the nation. Cities like Detroit and Boston are investing in similar initiatives aimed at community engagement and revitalization. As mentioned in Smart Cities Dive, public art projects in these urban areas aim to enhance well-being and social connections among residents, breathing life into neighborhoods.

The connection between art and community has never been more evident. Kissimmee’s award-winning efforts are not just about beautifying the city; they’re also about creating spaces where stories are shared, relationships are built, and creativity flourishes. With plans for augmented reality features and QR codes for walking tours embedded in some murals, the future looks not just colorful but dynamically interactive.

As Mayor Jackie Espinosa succinctly puts it, “This award reflects Kissimmee’s focus on growth, investment, and creating a welcoming environment.” As the murals continue to emerge, so does a renewed sense of pride and community identity, proving that in Kissimmee, art truly does make a difference.
