HSS Celebrates Five Years in West Palm Beach with Major Expansion Plans

Palm Beach, Florida, USA - In the heart of Palm Beach, a celebration unfolded that marked a pivotal moment for orthopedic care in Florida. Roberta and Stanley Bogen opened their oceanfront home for a reception on March 1, honoring the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) as it celebrated its fifth anniversary in West Palm Beach. Situated on the historic grounds of Lagomar, designed by Addison Mizner in 1924, the event was a blend of elegance and purpose, featuring cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and heartfelt storytelling. In attendance were over 175 guests, unified by a common interest in advancing orthopedic care.
During the evening, Bryan T. Kelly, MD, the president and CEO of HSS, took to the podium to share HSS’s commitment to patient care and research, emphasizing its leadership in the field. Tara McCoy, CEO of HSS Florida, further reinforced this dedication, announcing exciting expansion plans aimed at enhancing services across the region. McCoy outlined initiatives that include a partnership with Naples Comprehensive Health, as well as new satellite offices, starting with a location in Jupiter and a collaborative effort with UHealth to establish an ambulatory facility at the SoLé Mia complex in North Miami. As McCoy noted, “We are dedicated to excellence and community support,” showcasing HSS’s mission to bring top-notch care closer to Floridian patients.
Bringing Expertise Closer to Home
It’s no secret that many Floridians have opted to travel to HSS in New York City for orthopedic care. The hospital’s reputation speaks for itself, having been ranked No. 1 in orthopedics for 15 consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report (2024-2025). Thankfully, Florida residents can find that same leading-edge care right at home, especially at the HSS facility in West Palm Beach and through its collaboration with NCH in Naples. Thousands have benefited from the vast expertise of HSS Florida doctors, experienced in treating a range of orthopedic conditions and offering services such as joint replacements, second opinions, and nonsurgical orthopedic care (HSS).
The recent groundbreaking of the Patty & Jay Baker Pavilion is another significant step in this journey. On November 10, 2023, HSS and NCH began construction on a cutting-edge musculoskeletal center located on the NCH North Naples Hospital campus. This facility will span over 80,000 square feet and provide both inpatient and outpatient orthopedic services including an ambulatory surgery center and rehabilitation, all operated in partnership with HSS. The center aims to diminish the necessity for long-distance travel, a significant relief for those needing specialized orthopedic treatment in the community.
Commitment to Community
Funding for the new project is primarily reliant on private donations, a commitment highlighted by Jay Baker, a Board Trustee at NCH, whose generous pledge of a $20 million match grant for orthopedic services has set a strong foundation for community support. The new center is expected to open in early 2025, promising to reshape the orthopedic care landscape in Southwest Florida and serve generations to come. With a commitment to maintaining low complication and readmission rates, HSS performs over 35,000 orthopedic surgical procedures annually, emphasizing their reputation for excellence in musculoskeletal health.
As Paul Hiltz, NCH President & CEO, remarked, this milestone represents a significant advancement in enhancing orthopedic care locally, allowing patients to seek treatment where they live, rather than traveling across the country. David L. Helfet, MD, who will serve as the Executive Medical Director at HSS at NCH, embodies this dedication to orthopedic excellence, specializing in hip conditions within the Hip Preservation Service at HSS (NCH).
In light of these developments, there’s a palpable sense of excitement in the air for Florida’s future in orthopedic care. With strong leadership, community engagement, and state-of-the-art facilities on the horizon, the Hospital for Special Surgery is poised to not just broaden its footprint in Florida, but to cement its role as a beacon of hope and healing for countless patients seeking the very best in orthopedic treatment.
