Clay County, USA - In a proud moment for St. Johns County, the Board of County Commissioners recently honored the shining stars of the Parks and Recreation Department during their meeting on June 17. The Maintenance Division has done a splendid job, with their hard work truly paying off at the Florida Recreation and Park Association’s 2025 Turf Rodeo, held on March 20 in Clay County. Out of the seven competing teams from Parks and Recreation departments across North Florida, St. Johns County came out on top, snagging first place overall!

The Turf Rodeo isn’t just another event; it’s a high-stakes challenge featuring ten specialized tasks that test the mettle of maintenance workers. From mastering equipment operation to prepping for stormy weather, the diverse challenges push the competitors to their limits. This year, the St. Johns County team outpaced their rivals, highlighting their commitment to excellence in maintaining the region’s countless parks.

A Glimpse into the Accomplishments

St. Johns County’s Maintenance Division boasts an extensive responsibility portfolio, managing:

  • 104 parks
  • 34 playgrounds
  • 134 athletic fields
  • 97 courts
  • 13 boat ramps
  • 8 community centers
  • 42 miles of beaches

The victory at the Turf Rodeo is a testament to their dedication and hard work. Team members didn’t just win the overall award; they also celebrated individual triumphs. Cade Philips and Bobby Whitty took home first place in the Field Lining Relay, while Charles Baker excelled in the Soccer Ball Blower Maze. Not to be outdone, Austin DeGrande and Tanner McMillan led the pack in the Lawnmower Race. Additionally, the team secured second place in four events and claimed third in five, reinforcing their status as top-tier competitors.

The Parks and Recreation Department continues to foster a culture of growth and training, as all participants received certificates for two hours of valuable training during the event, ensuring that their skills remain sharp and up-to-date.

A Community Focused on Inclusivity

Speaking of community, it’s important to spotlight the role of venues like Aberdeen Park, which features the inspiring Field of Dreams. This area emphasizes some core values: inclusion, joy, and togetherness. According to the St. Johns County Parks Foundation, the park is as much about the people involved as it is about the physical space itself. With co-founder and head umpire George Vancore leading the charge, the league at the park is welcoming and inclusive for players of all abilities. Here, everyone can have a good hand at enjoying recreational activities, regardless of their backgrounds.

Such facilities play a critical role in enhancing community engagement, as highlighted by the National Recreation and Park Association. Their resource guide emphasizes that local park and recreation agencies need to ensure accessibility and inclusivity in parks, programs, and facilities. With strategies for both internal assessment and building trust among communities, these guidelines help tailor approaches to fit the unique needs of different communities.

By implementing equitable community engagement strategies, agencies can improve the quality of parks and ensure that they serve diverse populations effectively. Making parks accessible to everyone is no small feat, and it demands ongoing collaboration and transparency from local leaders.

As we celebrate the triumphs of the St. Johns County Maintenance Division and the vibrant community spirit in our parks, we are reminded that there’s something to be said for the resolve and dedication of those who maintain these spaces. They truly make a difference in our everyday lives.
