Beloved Community Figure Morton Buss Passes at 90, Leaving Legacy of Service

Fort Myers, FL, USA - In a week marked by profound losses within the community, the memory of those we’ve lost lingers heavy in the air. A notable figure, Morton Keeler Buss, Sr., passed away on July 9, 2025, at the age of 90. Respected and loved, Buss leaves behind an inspiring legacy in our region. He was married to Eileen C. (Bowser) Buss for over 63 years, a partnership that many admired.

Born on March 16, 1935, in Mayville, New York, Morton was raised on a dairy farm in Sherman and took his first steps in faith at Sherman Baptist Church during his teenage years. In a small town where community matters, Morton was more than just a husband, father, and grandfather; he was a dedicated volunteer fireman, serving both the Sherman and Westfield Fire Departments. Over the years, he became known for his mechanical prowess, whether working as a truck mechanic at Nuttall Ford or as Service Manager at Monroe’s Marina in Barcelona.

A Life of Service and Passion

Morton was a true sports enthusiast, cheering for the New York Yankees and Buffalo Bills, while also closely following the thrill of NASCAR. He had a reputation for being able to fix almost anything with a motor, showcasing both skill and ingenuity. His years at First Baptist Church in Westfield underscored his commitment to his faith and community. Outside of work and volunteer commitments, he found joy in reading, hunting, and fishing, spending more than fifty cherished years at his hunting camp in Ridgway, PA.

Morton is survived by a loving family, including his brother Richard Buss from Fort Myers, FL, three sons—Morton Jr. (Becky), Timothy (Kimberly), and Lance (Kimberly)—as well as nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Eileen, along with his parents and step-siblings. Visitation for Morton will be held on July 15, 2025, at First Baptist Church in Westfield, followed by a service and a private burial alongside Eileen at Sherman Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to First Baptist Church of Westfield. Arrangements are managed by Morse Funeral Home in Brocton, NY.

Tragic Loss of Local Firefighters

Emergency responders are recalling both men not only for their firefighting skills but also for their deep commitment to community service. Doody was a member of the Cuyler Fire Department since 2014, and Memory had a rich family legacy in firefighting, starting his own volunteer journey at the tender age of four. Community members shared heartfelt stories about their influence and dedication, which has left a profound impact on their towns. Tragically, their deaths were due to exposure to dangerous gases associated with manure, emphasizing the unforeseen dangers that can surface in everyday tasks.

As we pause to reflect on the lives of these remarkable individuals, it’s clear that their contributions will resonate warmly in the hearts of those who knew them. The weight of loss can foster a stronger sense of community, reminding us to honor and remember those who have given so much.
