Wildfires have once again flared up in Palm Bay, creating a scene that has residents on edge. Just recently, Palm Bay Fire Rescue managed to contain brush fires that spread across about five acres at a site known as the Compound. This isn’t the first time, either. Just a week earlier, the firefighters had their hands full with half a dozen fires at the same location. Thankfully, Wednesday’s flames didn’t threaten any homes, but concerns linger in the community.
Interestingly, the Palm Bay Police Department hinted that a previous fire might have been sparked by one of their own cruisers. An officer checking on a homeless camp on Port Malabar Road could have ignited the dry brush with the vehicle’s exhaust. While the responding officer suffered minor injuries, it’s a relief that no serious harm was reported.
Suspicious Activity in the Air
Fast forward to April 30, and the fire situation escalated when crews battled another brush fire near the Compound, specifically close to Madden Avenue and Olivia Street. This time, precautionary evacuations were issued for about six nearby residences. Residents were finally allowed to return home later that day after firefighters managed to contain several fast-moving fires. Fortunately, no property damage has been reported, but the ongoing nature of these fires has raised some eyebrows.
Officials are increasingly worried about the suspicious nature of these blazes, which have been cropping up since April 26 and have burned a staggering total of over 12 acres. The first signs of trouble appeared around 3:30 p.m. near Madden Avenue, and by Thursday evening, about 95 percent of the fires were contained. However, it’s hard to shake the feeling that something more sinister may be at play—there’s talk of a potential arsonist in the area.
Assistant Palm Bay Fire Chief John Ringleb expressed uncertainty about the cause of the fires, which have been creeping ever closer to homes. Residents, understandably concerned, watched as a sheriff’s helicopter conducted water drops to help control the situation. With over 160 acres affected since late April, the community is holding its breath, hoping that no further evacuations will be necessary.
