Rockledge Mourns the Passing of Sports Icon Donald Soderstrom, 90

Rockledge, Florida, USA - In a heartfelt loss to the community, Rockledge bids farewell to Donald Soderstrom, a local sports icon who passed away peacefully at his home on June 15, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on February 10, 1935, in Concord, New Hampshire, Soderstrom was not just a name in the annals of local sports; he was a Hall of Fame athlete whose legacy spanned decades. He made his mark as a standout at Concord Catholic High School, earning induction into its Athletic Hall of Fame. His journey in sports continued as he played minor league baseball for the Boston Red Sox organization.
Beyond his prowess on the field, Soderstrom was known for his generosity. His commitment to young athletes was evident as he often gave away his own trophies to recognize their achievements. After moving to Florida in 1982, he became the head custodian at Merritt Island High School, where he also coached championship baseball, softball, and basketball teams until his retirement in 1997.
A Life Well Lived
Following his retirement from teaching, Soderstrom’s lifelong passion for sports turned to horse racing. He flourished as a successful breeder, trainer, and racer of Standardbred horses, even earning the accolade of Breeder of the Year from the Florida Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association. His later years were filled with fishing, gardening, and cherishing time with his family. Soderstrom is survived by his devoted wife Lois, daughters Arianne and Wendy, son-in-law Oscar, as well as grandchildren Sandra, Oscar E., and Sarah, and three great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass is scheduled for June 27 at 9:45 a.m. at Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Merritt Island, with burial later at Blossom Hill Cemetery in Concord, New Hampshire. For those interested in honoring his memory, donations may be made to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central and Northern New Hampshire.
