Highlights of U.S. Route 27 Special Routes

One notable special route was the Sebring–Avon Park Alternate Route, which existed from Sebring to Avon Park, Florida, until it was deleted in 1979. It has since been integrated into State Road 17 (SR 17). Similarly, the Haines City–Sunray Deli Estates Alternate Route ran in Polk County from Haines City to Sunray Deli Estates but was removed in 1998 and remained on maps until 2011, also becoming part of SR 17.

Another interesting route is the Lady Lake–Belleview Alternate Route, which operated around Lake Weir from Belleview to Lady Lake until 1980. This route was concurrent with US 441 Alternate and is now a part of County Road 25 (CR 25). In north-central Florida, the Williston–Perry Alternate Route spans 93.281 miles, winding primarily east-west despite being signed north-south. It runs between Williston and Perry and is concurrent with US 19/US 98 from Chiefland to Perry, featuring several hidden designations including SR 55 and SR 500. Recently, this route was upgraded to four lanes, allowing for a speed limit of 65 mph.

Business Loops in Georgia

Turning our gaze to Georgia, the Attapulgus Business Loop (US 27 Business) stretches 3.473 miles and runs concurrently with State Route 1 Business, beginning at US 27/SR 1 and is a part of the National Highway System. The Bainbridge Business Loop (US 27 Bus.) is another 3.064-mile route that starts at an interchange with US 27/US 84/SR 1/SR 38, also within the National Highway System.

Routes like the Blakely Business Loop and Cuthbert Business Loop further exemplify the significance of these business routes, which are vital for local economic activities. The Bremen Business Loop and Buchanan Business Loop are additional examples where US 27 Bus. routes provide essential connections to the communities they serve.

Historical Context and Further Information

Interestingly, Michigan had its own special routes of US 27 that have since been renumbered as routes of US 127 and other highways. This reflects the evolving nature of America’s highway system, which continuously adapts to meet the demands of local and regional travel.

As we explore these routes, it’s clear that they represent more than just lines on a map; they are key arteries of economic and social connectivity, each with its own unique story to tell. For more detailed information about these routes, check out the source here.
