On December 4, 2025, something shocking happened in Eustis, Florida. A jewelry store exploded, and it was all caught on surveillance video. The explosion, which shook the neighborhood, was caused by a gas leak. The store, known as Gemstones Jewelry Rocks, is located in the 100 block of South Eustis Street. Neil Janover from Tip Tops of America, Inc. shared the dramatic footage with Spectrum News, describing the sound of the explosion as a thunderous “BOOM,” unlike any truck noise you might hear around town.
According to an email from the city of Eustis, the explosion led to a structure fire that resulted in road closures nearby. The Eustis fire chief, Michael Swanson, confirmed that a woman was injured in the blast and was flown to a hospital in critical condition. It’s heart-wrenching to think about her and her service dog, who were inside the building at the time. Both sustained serious injuries, with the dog suffering burns on its face and body.
The Events Unfold
As the events unfolded, witnesses described a fireball shooting through the roof of the business, which must have been quite a sight. One neighbor, Jennifer Doyle, mentioned that her apartment shook from the force of the explosion, and she saw the injured woman emerge from the burning building. Just before the explosion, TECO Peoples Gas was working on a damaged natural gas pipeline nearby, and it seems that the explosion occurred shortly after a gas line was sealed due to leaks in the area. Strangely enough, the fire department had received a call about a gas leak just 90 minutes before the explosion happened.
What’s particularly puzzling is that the store didn’t even have a gas connection. The investigation is ongoing, with state fire marshals looking into what caused the gas leak and triggered the explosion. Fire Chief Swanson noted that the building was electrically operated, and no gas shutoffs or main lines were found. It’s a mystery that needs unraveling.
The condition of the injured woman and her service dog remains unclear as of December 5, 2025, and there has been no further update from the city of Eustis. However, the community is surely holding its breath, hoping for a positive outcome.
