On May 7, 2026, the Apopka Community Center will be buzzing with excitement as it hosts the annual Apopka Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. Located at 519 South Central Avenue, this cherished event is organized by the Apopka Christian Ministerial Alliance and will feature a renowned keynote speaker: Nick Anderson, the legendary Orlando Magic player and Hall of Fame inductee.
This year’s breakfast coincides with the National Day of Prayer, drawing hundreds of community members together for a morning of reflection and camaraderie. The newly elected Mayor, Nick Nesta, will preside over his first prayer breakfast since taking office on April 28, just a day before his inaugural city commission meeting on May 6.
Celebrating a Magic Legend
Nick Anderson is no stranger to the spotlight in Orlando. As the Magic’s first-ever draft pick during the 1989 NBA Draft, selected 11th overall from the University of Illinois, Anderson played a pivotal role in the team’s history, dedicating a decade of his life to the franchise from 1989 to 1999. During that time, he became the all-time leader in several key categories, including games played (692), field goals made (4,075), steals (1,004), and three-point field goals attempted (2,480).
Anderson’s impressive statistics include an average of 15.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.45 steals per game across 692 regular season games. He ranks second in the all-time list for points (10,650), three-point field goals made (900), and minutes played (22,440). His remarkable career was punctuated by a memorable moment when he stole the ball from Michael Jordan in the closing seconds of Game 1 of the 1995 Eastern Conference Semifinals, leading to a thrilling victory for the Magic.
Honors and Community Impact
In recognition of his contributions to the game and community, Anderson was inducted into the Orlando Magic Hall of Fame in 2014, the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame in September 2016, and the Florida Sports Hall of Fame in November 2019. Beyond his playing days, he has remained an active presence in the Orlando community, serving as a community ambassador for the Orlando Magic since joining the organization’s Community Relations Department in the summer of 2006.
His commitment to community service was acknowledged when he received the inaugural Rich and Helen DeVos Community Enrichment Award during the 1995-96 season. Additionally, he was the first recipient of the “Commitment to the Past” program by the Magic in the 2005-06 season. Anderson also shares his insights as a television analyst for select pre-game and post-game broadcasts.
