From girls flag football to boys water polo and even girls volleyball, the spirit of competition was alive and well across the fields and courts.
In girls flag football, Crean Lutheran had a standout night, securing victories against both Villa Park and Gahr. They first blanked Villa Park with a score of 12-0 and followed it up with a solid 18-7 win against Gahr. Gahr did find some redemption later on, narrowly defeating Villa Park by a score of 13-12. Meanwhile, Cerritos also made headlines, scoring a decisive 14-6 triumph over Santiago. As reported by the Orange County Register, this kickoff signals a hopeful season ahead for these teams.
Water Polo Highlights
Switching to the boys water polo arena, JSerra enjoyed their moment under the spotlight with a solid 8-4 victory against Mira Costa. The star players included Park and Colman, each netting three goals, while Ransford stood tall with seven saves and three steals. Other matches in this nonleague category saw Fountain Valley squeezing out a win against Estancia, finishing at 10-7, and Los Amigos overpowering Marshall with a score of 17-4. With a perfect record of 6-0, Mater Dei is set to advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face Carrollwood Day in what promises to be another thrilling encounter.
There’s something to be said for the values that come through participation in sports. As emphasized by the OCPS Athletics site, young student-athletes not only develop essential skills in teamwork and competition but also learn to win and lose with grace. This involvement helps forge a healthy self-concept and strengthens physical health. The pride and spirit that athletics bring to local schools can’t be overstated, creating a shared sense of community that enriches everyone involved.
Looking Ahead
As the athletic calendar rolls forward, the anticipation mounts among students, parents, and fans alike. The joint efforts of teams across all sports aim not only for wins but for lessons that extend far beyond the fields and courts.
