The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office has recently released the results of a forensic audit, a significant move following the arrest of suspended Sheriff Marcos Lopez in June 2025. Interim Sheriff Christopher Blackmon initiated the audit to bring clarity and accountability to the agency after Lopez faced serious allegations related to an illegal gambling operation. Lopez, who has pleaded not guilty, is charged with racketeering and is accused of running a multi-million-dollar gambling network in Lake and Osceola counties.
The audit, which spanned several critical units, including Evidence, Forensic Financial Analysis, and Information Technology, aimed to address and rectify any potential deficiencies within the sheriff’s office. The audit revealed a commendable level of accountability in the Evidence unit. Conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), it inspected 20,757 high-liability evidence items and reported 100% accountability. A random sample of 4,878 general evidence items also showed similar results, indicating excellent practices concerning security, safety, and the integrity of evidence.
On the financial side, the Forensic Financial Analysis, led by Forvis Mazars, LLP, focused on activities from January 1, 2021, to June 30, 2025. The analysis scrutinized procurement card transactions and agency expenditures, highlighting some procedural issues. As a result, the sheriff’s office has tightened rules regarding the use of purchasing cards (P cards), now restricting access to majors, civilian managers, and select officials only.
Information Technology Findings
The IT audit conducted by FDLE on August 13, 2025, revealed some minor compliance issues that have since been addressed. The sheriff’s office reinstated the position of IT director to improve oversight and efficiency. Ryan Potts, who was previously employed during Lopez’s tenure, has been rehired to tackle the identified IT needs, focusing on strengthening data security and enhancing the overall functionality of the department.
Blackmon has expressed his concern over the previous sheriff’s activities and is committed to ensuring the proper use of taxpayer money. The audit results have provided much-needed clarity for the agency as Lopez awaits trial. His estranged wife, Robin Severance Lopez, has also pleaded guilty to money laundering and is currently on probation.
