Speed Cameras Back in Action: Slow Down or Face the Fines!
Osceola County updates: Speed cameras activate, volunteer opportunities, and community events in Poinciana this August.

Speed Cameras Back in Action: Slow Down or Face the Fines!
As summer winds down, Osceola County revs up its commitment to keeping our children safe in school zones. With the recent activation of the Speed Zone Speed Safety Cameras, drivers are urged to mind their speed and adhere to traffic regulations around local schools. As reported by Around Osceola, the cameras are strategically placed near several educational institutions including Bellalago Academy, Poinciana High School, and Horizon Middle, among others.
The speed safety initiative is an important step as the county transitions into a new phase of its school zone speed safety program. Following an initial 30-day warning period, which ran from January 7 to February 5, citations and fines are now being issued to drivers exceeding the speed limit in these sensitive areas. More than 5,600 warnings were issued during this period, but the time for leniency has passed: drivers caught speeding can now expect a $100 fine, as detailed by Click Orlando.
Understanding the Speed Cameras
This robust safety program features state-of-the-art speed cameras installed at 32 high-risk locations to ensure that those transporting children to school drive responsibly. These cameras are designed to capture images of vehicles that exceed the speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour during school hours. A recent report from Orlando News highlighted that almost 70% of individuals who received a citation did not receive another, indicating a significant behavioral shift in driving habits.
The automated traffic safety program, operated in partnership with Verra Mobility, aims to enhance community safety, particularly for children traveling to and from school. Each incident recorded by the cameras is carefully reviewed by law enforcement before citations are issued, ensuring fairness in the enforcement of these important rules.
Community Involvement and Upcoming Events
In addition to the traffic safety initiatives, there are numerous community events coming up that residents will not want to miss. Volunteers are needed for the School District of Osceola County—interested parties can apply online. For those looking for a bit of fun, a Martial Arts Competition known as the Challenge Match is set for September 5, held at the Mary Jane Arrington Gym and Aquatic Center.
Furthermore, the Association of Poinciana Villages is hosting its annual Poolside Luau on September 6. This event promises to be a great opportunity for community bonding and relaxation. There are also various educational workshops taking place at the Poinciana library, including sessions on essential job skills and nature writing, all offered free to the public.
As we gear up for the new school year, it’s crucial to remember the importance of mindfulness behind the wheel, especially in school zones. By adhering to the speed limits and respecting these new safety measures, we can all play a part in protecting our most precious resource: our children.
