Winter Haven, Florida, USA - In a thrilling turn of events for Florida high school sports, George Jenkins High School has clinched the Big Schools All-Sports Award, putting an end to a nine-year drought. Meanwhile, McKeel Academy has made a splash by securing the Small Schools All-Sports Award for the second consecutive year. These achievements reflect both dedication and talent, resonating throughout the local community and showcasing what high school athletics is all about.

According to The Ledger, George Jenkins dominated the competition with a total of 379 points. Lake Wales followed with 331 points, while Winter Haven trailed with 303 points. This year’s success is particularly sweet for George Jenkins, as they had been second last year to Winter Haven, finishing just 10 points off the mark. But with a newfound drive, they scored 112 points in the fall season alone, thanks to a stellar performance in boys cross country, where they earned a district title, and impressive runner-up finishes in volleyball, boys golf, and girls bowling.

Winter Winners

As the winter season unfolded, George Jenkins kept the momentum going, amassing another 108 points—38 points more than the previous year. Their district titles in both boys and girls soccer and boys wrestling were significant contributions to this score. By the end of winter, George Jenkins had built a solid lead with 220 points, keeping Lake Wales and Lakeland at bay.

The spring season saw George Jenkins score an additional 159 points, with district champions in baseball and track, confirming their status as a powerhouse. Not to be overlooked, McKeel Academy finished the Small Schools category with 294 points, edging out Lakeland Christian, which ended at 274 points. In this category, McKeel’s athletic director expressed immense pride in the coaches and athletes who showcase dedication and tenacity.

A Legacy of Achievement

Reflecting on the history of the awards, George Jenkins has reached remarkable heights, winning the Big Schools All-Sports Award 14 times overall. They had previously dominated the first decade of the awards, with eight titles over that span. In stark contrast, McKeel’s recent triumph represents a steady ascent, having now claimed the Small Schools honor back-to-back.

The competition measures not just victory but also sportsmanship and engagement across various sports, as elaborated by FHSAA. Schools participate in programs that recognize athletic and academic excellence, proving that teamwork and dedication extend beyond the playing fields. Across supported sports and a commitment to positive sportsmanship, athletes from both schools embody the spirit of competition and camaraderie.

Track to the Future

On the track and field front, George Jenkins continues to leave its mark with numerous records. Notably, athletes like Chelsi Williams have pushed the limits in both hurdles and sprints, contributing to the program’s rich legacy. For instance, Williams’ recent performance of 13.28 seconds in the 100m hurdles ties into this ongoing tradition of excellence.

The results this year affirm a long-standing principle: hard work and determination pay off. As the community celebrates these achievements, it’s clear that George Jenkins and McKeel Academy are setting the stage for future successes in high school sports, generating pride and spirit among students and fans alike.
