Today is May 9, 2026, and the Sanford community is rallying together for a heartwarming cause. A group of rescued sloths at the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens is receiving much-needed support after a tragic situation unfolded at Sloth World, an Orlando facility that faced severe neglect and malnutrition. The fallout has been devastating, with records from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services indicating that at least 55 sloths have tragically died in connection with that facility. Thankfully, 13 survivors have found refuge at the Central Florida Zoo, although three of them have since passed away.
Among the survivors is the youngest and tiniest sloth, Mr. Ginger, who is currently in critical condition and requires intensive care. The zoo has shared heartwarming photos of Mr. Ginger, showcasing his journey as he fights to recover. It’s a tough battle, but the community is coming together to help him and his fellow sloths.
Community Support and Fundraising Efforts
Patty Mahany, a board member of Sanford Main Street, has been at the forefront of the fundraising efforts. She emphasizes the importance of keeping wildlife in their natural habitats and only placing them in accredited zoos. In light of the sloths’ plight, she reached out to Paul Williams to brainstorm ways to raise funds for their care. This collaboration led to the creation of the T-shirt campaign featuring the slogan “Help Us Hang In There.”
These T-shirts are priced at $35 and are available at the Sanford Welcome Center, with a second printing expected soon. Every dollar raised from T-shirt sales goes directly toward the medical care and rehabilitation of the sloths. Mahany is also keen to warn supporters about unauthorized T-shirt sellers who lack the zoo’s approval—it’s essential to ensure that contributions are reaching those who need it most.
The financial burden on the Central Florida Zoo is significant. They’ve had to bring in additional staff and specialists from South America to provide the sloths with the best possible care. If you can’t snag a T-shirt, Mahany encourages everyone to support the zoo by purchasing tickets. After all, every little bit helps!
A Bright Future for Sloths?
While the situation remains critical, there’s hope on the horizon. Local efforts, like the T-shirt campaign, are not just about raising funds—they’re about uniting the community for a greater cause. The resilience of these sloths and the dedication of the people rallying behind them is truly inspiring. For more details, you can check out the full story here.

It’s a chance for all of us to contribute to a brighter future—not just for the sloths, but for all the creatures that share our world. Whether it’s through a T-shirt purchase or a visit to the zoo, every action counts.
