Today is the 23rd of March, 2026, and the healthcare landscape in North Port is about to change dramatically. After waiting over 60 years, residents will soon see the rise of their first hospital, the SMH-North Port, set to transform local healthcare access. The Sarasota Memorial Health System (SMH) is gearing up to clear land for this pivotal project, alongside a significant $57 million expansion that promises to bring extensive medical services to the area.

Located on Sumter Boulevard, the new hospital has been a hot topic in community discussions, particularly after SMH decided to select this location over the previously acquired Wellen Park property at 7900 S. Tamiami Trail. This decision came after SMH acquired the Wellen Park land through a land swap back in 2015. While the Wellen Park site has been zoned for hospital and medical office use, there is currently no timeline for its development, leaving many to wonder what the future holds for this prime real estate.

The New Hospital’s Features

The construction of the nine-story SMH-North Port hospital, which commenced in December, represents a $507 million investment in the local community. This facility will initially feature 100 beds, with plans to expand to 208 beds and eventually accommodate as many as 400 beds. The strategic choice of the Sumter Boulevard site is driven by its proximity to I-75 and the noticeable lack of hospitals in the immediate area, a move that solidifies SMH’s existing market dominance in Wellen Park.

Currently, Wellen Park is home to about 10,000 residents, but projections indicate that this number could swell to between 50,000 and 60,000 as development progresses. North Port itself is nearing a population of 100,000, highlighting the growing demand for healthcare services in the region. With additional developments like Winchester Ranch potentially adding another 9,000 homes, the need for comprehensive healthcare options is more pressing than ever.

Healthcare Providers Expanding in the Area

It’s not just SMH making strides in North Port. Other healthcare providers are also expanding their services. Exalt Health and HCA Healthcare are stepping up their operations in the area, reflecting a broader trend in healthcare accessibility. Just last year, HCA Florida opened a stand-alone ER on S. Tamiami Trail, while SMH continues to operate two urgent care centers in nearby Venice.

As the SMH board plans to discuss budgeting and strategic planning in the late spring and early summer, the future of the Wellen Park site will surely be a point of contention. With so much development on the horizon, the community eagerly awaits further updates on how healthcare will evolve in North Port.
