Hollywood, FL, USA - In a heartfelt gathering at 770, community members from far and wide convened to bid farewell to Rabbi Avrohom Korf, Florida’s Head Shliach, who passed away at the age of 92 on the night of Yud Beis Tammuz, 5785. His contributions to Chabad and the Jewish community in Florida spanned over five decades, establishing him as a pivotal figure in the region.

Rabbi Korf’s journey began in Kharkov, where he was born to R’ Yehoshua and Chaya Rivka Korf on 2 Cheshvan, 5693 (1932). His family fled the perils of World War II to Samarkand, Uzbekistan, and later escaped the Soviet Union in 1947, alongside Rebbetzin Chana, the mother of the Rebbe. After a period in the Poking refugee camp, Rabbi Korf studied at the Yeshivah in Brunoy, France, before arriving in the United States in 5713 (1953) and joining the Yeshiva at 770. His life took a transformative turn when he married Rivka in 5720 (1960) with the Rebbe officiating, shortly before embarking on his shlichus to Florida, as reported by Anash.

Transformative Contributions

Upon his arrival in Miami in 1960, Rabbi Korf recognized the tremendous potential for Jewish growth in a community that was undergoing significant change. At the time, Florida’s Jewish population numbered around 175,000, yet lacked substantial Jewish institutions. Undeterred, Rabbi Korf set forth on a mission that would see him establish over 400 Chabad Houses around the state, launching a vibrant network of Shluchim that would bring Yiddishkeit to countless individuals. His efforts blossomed into institutions such as the Landow Yeshiva, which he helped expand from a modest beginning of six children to a flourishing educational center now serving approximately 2,500 students across various levels, as highlighted by COLlive.

Rabbi Korf’s tireless dedication also led to the establishment of a Jewish summer camp and the development of critical infrastructure, including synagogues and mikvaos. His expertise in constructing these kosher facilities reached beyond Florida, aiding communities worldwide. The fruits of his labor can be seen in the state today, which boasts one of the largest Jewish populations in the U.S., now numbering around 750,000.

A Lasting Legacy

Rabbi Korf is survived by his children—Rabbi Yossi Korf of Hollywood, FL, Mrs. Rashi Raices from Postville, Iowa, Mrs. Shevi Sossonko and Rabbi Benjy Korf from Miami Beach, Mrs. Leah Jacobson of Crown Heights, and several others—along with a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His beloved wife, Rivka, predeceased him in 5778, leaving a legacy of faith and community service that continues to inspire, as noted by ChabadInfo.

The levaya will take place on Tuesday at 8:00 AM, starting from Chabad Lubavitch Headquarters in Miami Beach. The procession will travel to North Miami Beach and Miami, concluding at Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, New York, with shiva details forthcoming. The community is invited to join in evening and morning prayers at 1219 President St in Crown Heights, details of which are available on community calendars.

As Florida reflects on Rabbi Korf’s vast influence, the community stands united, carrying forward the torch he lit for future generations. His commitment and compassionate leadership touched the hearts of many, ensuring that his impact is felt in the vibrant Jewish life of Florida well into the future.
