As we head into the summer months, the Broward Mosquito Control Section is gearing up for an aerial assault on pesky mosquitoes, targeting adult populations in the wake of recent heavy rains. From July 12 to July 14, 2025, residents of Southwest Ranches, Davie, Pembroke Pines, and Weston can expect aerial spraying to take place overnight from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. This proactive measure aims to address increased mosquito complaints in the area, especially buzzing about the large and aggressive „gallinippers“ known scientifically as Psorophora species.

Broward Mosquito Control has responded to over 6,000 service requests regarding mosquito issues, highlighting the need for this intervention. Aerial adulticide spraying is specifically designed to target these nuisance mosquitoes, which, while they do not transmit viruses such as Zika or dengue, have earned a reputation for being particularly aggressive biters. As such, the spraying operation is crucial for enhancing outdoor comfort and reducing complaints from residents.

Preparation and Guidelines

Residents can lend a hand by eliminating standing water around their homes, which serves as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Those who might be sensitive, especially individuals with breathing difficulties, are advised to stay indoors during the spraying hours to ensure their safety. The Broward Mosquito Control Section has assured that all necessary precautions are taken during this operation.

In line with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines, aerial spraying is considered a safe method for managing mosquito populations when implemented correctly. This method is more efficient than traditional truck-mounted or handheld sprayers, particularly for larger areas. The products used in aerial spraying target adult mosquitoes, providing a temporary reduction in their numbers without a lasting impact on the environment or human health. The CDC explains that while it’s not mandatory to leave the area during spraying, folks might prefer to stay indoors to avoid minor irritations.

Stay Informed

Residents can stay updated on spraying schedules via announcements through various channels, including local media, websites, and social media. Those registered for alerts will receive a notification before any spraying occurs, ensuring that everyone is informed and prepared.
