As we gear up for the Fourth of July festivities, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is taking extra precautions to ensure safety this holiday weekend. It’s a time filled with celebration, fireworks, and good vibes, but sadly, recent events have cast a shadow over the upcoming celebrations. Just this past Thursday morning, two tragic traffic accidents occurred, resulting in fatalities. A 91-year-old man driving a van struck and killed a pedestrian on Pine Lakes Parkway, while a collision involving a tractor-trailer and a pickup on West State Road 100 led to one fatality and a serious injury. In light of these incidents, State Road 100 is currently closed in both directions between County Road 302 and Deen Road, and Pine Lakes Parkway is also closed at Wellington Drive. It’s a stark reminder of how quickly things can change.

To address safety concerns, the Sheriff’s Office will ramp up patrols starting July 3, continuing through the holiday weekend. This effort includes a focus on major roadways, waterways, beaches, parks, and other high-activity areas. The enforcement will specifically target aggressive driving, speeding, and seat-belt violations, with a dedicated team on DUI enforcement as well. So, if you’re planning to celebrate with a drink in hand, remember: safety first!

Increased Enforcement and Community Events

Alongside the traffic enforcement, the FCSO Marine Unit will be on the lookout for unsafe boating practices on the Intracoastal Waterway and nearby canals. Sheriff Rick Staly has emphasized the importance of responsible celebration, particularly warning against drinking and driving. With increased activity expected at beaches, parks, and during community events for the United Flagler Fourth celebration, it’s vital to stay vigilant and aware.

Speaking of celebrations, there are some fantastic community events lined up! On July 3, join the fun at First Friday at Veterans Park in Flagler Beach at 6 p.m. Then, on July 4, don’t miss the Stars and Stripes Parade at 9 a.m. along A1A from 6th Street North to 6th Street South. And for the grand finale, Fireworks Over the Runways at Flagler Executive Airport in Palm Coast will kick off at 9 p.m., with public entry starting at 5 p.m. Just a heads-up though—private fireworks are illegal in Palm Coast and Flagler Beach, but they’re allowed in unincorporated Flagler County on July 4.

Stay Safe and Secure

As we dive into the holiday spirit, it’s crucial to remember some safety tips. Residents and visitors are strongly urged to lock their vehicle doors, hide valuables, and stay aware of their surroundings to prevent crimes of opportunity. After all, it’s all fun and games until someone loses their wallet! The FCSO Operations Center, District 2 office, and Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility will close on Thursday at noon, reopening on Monday, July 6, at 8 a.m. For emergencies, don’t hesitate to call 9-1-1; for non-emergencies, reach out at 386-313-4911.

While we celebrate our nation’s independence, let’s also remember to celebrate responsibly. Fireworks can be a blast, but they can also cause discomfort for some, including those with PTSD, autism, and even our furry friends. So, let’s keep the festive spirit alive while looking out for one another this holiday season!
