Today is July 18, 2026, and it seems Central Florida just couldn’t catch a break from the wild weather. A storm system rolled in from the Gulf of Mexico last Friday, and it brought with it some jaw-dropping sights and sounds. Coastal communities were treated to a massive waterspout off the Sebastian coast, while emergency teams were busy dealing with dangerous lightning strikes inland. Talk about a mixed bag of Mother Nature!
Photographers Bill and Jennifer Larrabee were lucky enough to catch the spectacle from a restaurant in Sebastian. Jennifer, who has seen her fair share of storms in her 38 years along Florida’s coast, described the waterspout as the most impressive thing she’d ever witnessed. Wow! Bill chimed in about the rapid movement of the weather event and those swirling waters in the Intracoastal—definitely a sight to behold!
Lightning Strikes and Fires
Not everything was as picturesque, though. In Altamonte Springs, a lightning strike caused a fire in an apartment complex when an electrical surge traveled through the building structure. Thankfully, the Seminole County Fire Department managed to extinguish the flames completely, and miraculously, no injuries were reported. It’s always a relief when things don’t end in tragedy.
Meanwhile, in Marion County, drivers faced a deluge of rain and booming thunder that rattled windows and nerves alike. Samuel Britt, who was riding his motorcycle through Ocala, reported extreme lightning and noise that made the whole experience feel like a scene from a disaster movie. And let’s not forget the residents in Northeast Ocala! They were still reeling from a severe weather event just a week prior that had already downed trees. This time around, while tree and flooding damage was minimal, frequent power outages from the lightning made for an exhausting day. Janet Mosley, a local, described the rain and lightning conditions as simply unbearable.
Weather’s Unpredictable Nature
It’s fascinating how quickly the weather can switch gears, isn’t it? Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Florida throws another curveball. The juxtaposition between the stunning waterspout and the destructive lightning is a stark reminder of nature’s dual personality. Sometimes, it feels like we’re living in a real-life rollercoaster, with the highs and lows happening in the blink of an eye.
