Busan's Tourist Boom: New Hotspots Ignite International Excitement!

According to Korea JoongAng Daily, lines for the Sky Capsule have exceeded 100 meters, with over 90% of those waiting being foreign tourists eager to capture breathtaking views of the coastline.

In 2023 alone, Busan welcomed nearly 2.93 million foreign tourists, the highest figure since 2016. The increase is underscored by a remarkable recovery from the pandemic years, with over 5.5 million tourists arriving in South Korea from January to April 2023, breaking the previous record set in 2019. In this vibrant context, Blueline Park has attracted approximately 1.2 million foreign visitors.

Major Attractions and the Visit Busan Pass

Tourists seem to be latching on to the new trends and experiences in the city. The Visit Busan Pass, launched in February 2023, has played a significant role in attracting visitors. Offering free access to major attractions such as Busan Tower, the Trick Museum, and even the quirky Poopoo Land, this pass is gaining traction, with over 310,000 sold — a whopping 73% purchased by tourists from Taiwan. This pass is valid for 72 hours from its first use, making it a convenient option for first-time visitors.

The pass includes access to newer attractions like the Busan X the Sky, which welcomed around 250,000 foreign visitors last year. Not to mention, the Starbucks on the 99th floor is marketed as the highest Starbucks in the world, drawing coffee lovers to incredible heights. The increasing popularity of the Skyline Luge, which opened in 2021, also shows just how eager international tourists are to explore everything Busan has to offer.

A Surge in Tourist Numbers

In November 2023, Haps reported that Busan exceeded its annual target of foreign tourists by reaching over 1.5 million. The city saw a staggering increase of 165.9% in foreign visitors compared to the previous year. With the cumulative number of foreign tourists hitting 1,674,013, it seems Busan has established itself as a favorite destination, contributing 16.75% to the total foreign tourist count in South Korea.

The most significant source of these visitors? Japan, making up about 19.1% of tourists. However, Taiwan’s remarkable 94.7% growth in visitors, totaling about 504,560, showcases how the tide is turning. With approximately 140 direct flights per week between Busan and Taiwan, it’s clear that easy access is boosting tourism. Other noteworthy contributors include the USA, China, and the Philippines, creating a diverse tapestry of travelers.

The Busan Tourism Organization’s proactive strategy also aims to attract even more visitors, particularly from China, with ambitious plans to surpass 2.1 million foreign tourists next year.
