Today is May 23, 2026, and there’s some news brewing in Martin County that’s sure to stir the pot. The Old Roosevelt Bridge is gearing up for some serious maintenance work, and it’s been a long time coming. After 30 years of use, it’s finally getting the TLC it deserves, with the completion of the project anticipated for early 2028. That’s right, folks—buckle up!

Starting in 2027, you can expect traffic delays that might just test your patience. The bridge will close for an estimated four to five months, which is quite the stretch for anyone who relies on it. And if you think that’s bad, while it’s partially open during those four months, only one of the two lanes will be operational. You can imagine the backup—over 10,000 vehicles use this bridge daily, according to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). So, plan your routes wisely!

What’s Happening?

The maintenance project, costing a hefty $7.5 million, will primarily involve electrical and mechanical work. It’s part of a routine maintenance plan that’s done on movable bridges every 25 years. The only structural repair planned is the application of an epoxy coating on the bridge deck to prevent corrosion. So, while it might not sound like a big deal, it’s crucial for the bridge’s longevity.

During the closure, traffic will be redirected over the High Bridge, and flaggers will be on hand to manage the flow, mainly during off-peak hours. Interestingly enough, there will be no work during the Stuart Boat Show next year, which is a relief for local boaters and visitors alike. It’s good to know that at least one leaf of the bridge will remain operational to keep the boating industry running smoothly. Dan Romence, president of the Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast, mentioned that the bridge will have minimal impact on marine traffic. So, there’s that silver lining!

Historical Significance

For a bit of context, the Old Roosevelt Bridge has been a part of the community since 1934, but it’s not what it used to be. It’s now just half its original size! It’s kind of a bittersweet reminder of how infrastructure ages and needs attention. As we look forward to the renovations, let’s hope they bring back some of that old charm—and functionality—while ensuring safety for everyone who crosses.
