Get ready, paddling enthusiasts! The Florida Paddling Trails Association (FPTA) is hosting a special event, the Florida Paddling Trails Association Member Appreciation Paddle, set against the stunning backdrop of historic Stiltsville in Key Biscayne. This event is a fantastic opportunity for members and newcomers alike to appreciate the beauty of Florida’s waterways while enjoying a day of fun, fellowship, and adventure.
Since its inception in 2004, the FPTA has been dedicated to supporting the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail. This impressive trail stretches 1,515 miles from Big Lagoon State Park in Alabama all the way to Fort Clinch State Park in Georgia. It offers a unique way to experience Florida’s coastline, and paddling enthusiasts can now enjoy downloadable maps and resources to aid their journey.
Event Details
The Member Appreciation Paddle is scheduled for April 11, 2026, with a safety briefing at 8:45 AM and departure at 9:00 AM from the kayak launch site in Bill Baggs State Park. Participants can expect to paddle approximately 7 miles, returning by 3:00 PM. Be aware that this event is weather-dependent, with possible last-minute changes or cancellations.
To join the fun, you’ll need to bring your own kayak, and there are certain requirements: kayaks must be sit-on-top, inflatable, or have bulkheads. Participants of all skill levels are welcome, making it a great way to connect with fellow paddlers. Don’t forget to wear your personal flotation device (PFD) at all times, as safety is paramount when navigating open waters.
Entry to Bill Baggs State Park is just $8 (or $4 for single-occupant vehicles), with the park opening at 8 AM. Parking is available about 200 yards from the launch site, so consider bringing a cart to transport your gear.
What to Bring
As you prepare for your day on the water, make sure to pack the essentials: sunscreen, insect repellent, plenty of drinking water, and snacks or lunch to keep your energy up. Facilities at the park include restrooms with changing areas and outdoor showers, so you can freshen up after your paddle.
And if you’re new to kayaking, you might want to check out the PADL kiosk for rentals, although it’s recommended for those with a bit more experience. Remember, each participant is responsible for their safety, so come prepared!
Supporting Future Generations
Your participation in this event also supports a great cause. Proceeds go towards the Taylor Howard Youth Paddling Fund, which helps provide paddling camps for children, fostering a love for the outdoors and paddling from a young age. Additionally, FPTA Trail Angels are available to assist paddlers, offering support such as supply procurement and transportation.
For those looking to explore the entire Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail, registration is required to qualify for the Hall of Fame upon completion. The FPTA has released the 9th Edition of the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Guide for 2024, ensuring paddlers have the latest information at hand.
So, mark your calendars and get ready for a day of paddling, community, and adventure at Stiltsville! Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a curious newcomer, this event promises to be an unforgettable experience. For more details, visit the event page here.
