Today is July 23, 2026, and there’s a buzz in the air here in Key Biscayne! Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is gearing up for some significant infrastructure upgrades that will have a positive impact on the local community. With plans set for 2026, FPL is focused on creating a stronger, smarter, and storm-resilient power grid right here in our beautiful island paradise.
What’s on the agenda? Well, for starters, they’ll be clearing nine miles of power lines from trees and vegetation—because let’s face it, no one wants a surprise power outage when a storm rolls through! Additionally, 20 power poles will be inspected, reinforced, or even replaced if they don’t meet FPL’s strict standards. It’s all about keeping the lights on and the community safe, folks!
Enhancing Reliability
FPL is making strides to enhance reliability across Florida. They aim to prevent over 1.6 million customer interruptions by 2025 thanks to their self-healing smart-grid technology. That’s right—246,000 smart devices will be installed throughout the FPL network to detect potential issues before they become a problem. And if you thought that was impressive, nearly 2,000 miles of overhead lines in residential areas are being moved underground. Talk about a modern upgrade!
Did you know that 85% of the main power lines have already been reinforced or buried? It’s a big deal, especially since 97% of the transmission structures are now made of steel or concrete. This kind of investment is crucial, especially in a storm-prone state like Florida.
Recognized for Excellence
FPL’s commitment to service reliability has not gone unnoticed. They received the ReliabilityOne® National Reliability Award from PA Consulting for outstanding service reliability in 2025. Plus, they’ve been honored with the National Reliability Value Award, highlighting their ability to keep customer bills low while strategically investing in the power grid. Now, that’s a win-win!

As we look forward to these upgrades, it’s heartening to see a company that’s dedicated to making our power infrastructure not just reliable, but resilient too. Key Biscayne is a vibrant community, and with these improvements, we can all feel a bit more secure as we enjoy everything this lovely island has to offer. Here’s to brighter, safer days ahead!
