Mark your calendars and grab your appetite! The Key Biscayne Rib-Off is gearing up for another exciting year, celebrating its 20th anniversary. This beloved event, which started as a cozy backyard barbecue among friends, has morphed into a vibrant community gathering that draws in locals and visitors alike. The Rib-Off will take place at the picturesque Key Biscayne Yacht Club, where the aroma of barbecued ribs fills the air and the spirit of friendly competition thrives.
One of the highlights of this annual event is its dedication to honoring the late Dr. Robert Kemper, a respected figure in the community. The Rib-Off raises funds for the Dr. Robert Kemper Award for Professionalism in Medicine at Florida International University (FIU). This award recognizes fourth-year medical students who exemplify respect, altruism, community spirit, and essential personal demeanor. The Key Biscayne Community Foundation proudly serves as the financial sponsor for this noble cause.
Rain or Shine, the Show Goes On
This year, despite the rain and gusting winds, 23 teams rolled up their sleeves and fired up their grills, showcasing their culinary skills. The competitors prepared an array of ribs and delectable side dishes, all while setting up tents and umbrellas to shelter from the elements. These tents became lively gathering spots, brimming with laughter, music, and, of course, fantastic food.
The competition was fierce, with only 1.17588 points separating the top two teams. In a thrilling finish, Stony Broma’s, led by Aabad Melwani, took home the first-place trophy. Hot on their heels was The Ribbones, helmed by Andres Navarro, who secured a well-deserved second place. Smilin’ Swine, led by the dynamic duo Jorge Blanco and Beth Azola, rounded out the top three with their mouthwatering offerings. The Stony Broma’s team included talented members such as Alvaro Silva, Bruce Carrick, Henrique Cisneros, James Wolcott, Jorge Granier, Manny Rionda, and Santi Más.
Commitment to Sustainability
This year’s Rib-Off also shone a spotlight on sustainability, a growing trend in the event industry. Organizers promoted environmentally conscious practices by encouraging the use of plastic-free and compostable serveware. Manny Rionda expressed his gratitude to the teams for their efforts in making the event more sustainable, highlighting the importance of reducing waste and protecting our planet.
As we look ahead, the next Key Biscayne Rib-Off is already in the works, scheduled for Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM EST. This family-friendly BBQ competition will continue to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Bob Kemper and bring the community together for a day filled with fun, food, and live music. Attendees can look forward to enjoying mouth-watering ribs alongside a host of festivities that make this event a must-attend. You can find more information about the upcoming Rib-Off here.
