As summer reaches its peak, the beauty of Florida’s lakes can often be marred by the unexpected arrival of blue-green algae blooms. Recently, the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) confirmed one such bloom in Callander Bay from a water sample taken on July 29, 2025. It’s crucial for the local community to stay alert to such developments, as the municipality issued a notification regarding this situation on August 12, following confirmation received on August 11 from MECP.

The public is being urged to steer clear of the algae bloom. Health experts remind us that these blooms can harbor toxins harmful not just to humans, but pets and livestock as well. Recommendations include:

  • Assume toxins are present and avoid any contact with the bloom.
  • Refrain from bathing or swimming in affected waters.
  • Do not drink untreated lake water during an algae bloom.
  • Keep pets and livestock away from both untreated water and the shore.
  • Note that boiling algae-laden water does not purify it, and could actually increase toxin concentrations.

If you happen to find clear water without visible blooms, recreational activities such as boating and fishing remain safe. For health-related queries regarding the algae blooms, residents can visit the North Bay Health Unit’s website, while general information about blue-green algae is available on the MECP’s website. Staying informed can go a long way toward enjoying a safe summer by the water!

Understanding Blue-Green Algae

What exactly are we dealing with when we mention blue-green algae? These organisms, formally known as cyanobacteria, are actually prokaryotic bacteria. They are photosynthetic and thrive in freshwater, though they can also be found in saltwater. While they are commonly referred to as „algae,“ they belong to a different biological classification than true algae, which are eukaryotic and encompass various forms like the colorful ones highlighted by Encyclopedia.com in their detailed examination of algae types.

Algae itself is an umbrella term covering several divisions of organisms—from unicellular microalgae to the more complex multicellular varieties found in marine environments. They play a vital role in aquatic ecosystems, acting as primary producers and contributing to food webs. However, factors such as nutrient availability can limit their productivity, leading to complications like harmful algal blooms.
