West Nipissing Seeks Crossing Guards for Safe School Openings!

As the summer sun begins its slow retreat, it’s that time of year again when parents and students gear up for the new school year. In West Nipissing, preparations are already underway to ensure that students can get to and from school safely. The municipality is on the lookout for two dedicated crossing guards for Ethel Street and Coursol Road, right in time for the beginning of classes on September 3.

Why the emphasis on crossing guards, you might ask? Well, they play a crucial role in keeping our children out of harm’s way as they navigate busy streets. The positions being offered are part-time and casual, with a competitive pay rate of $20 per hour. The duties require availability from 8 to 8:45 a.m. and 3 to 3:45 p.m., Monday to Friday, throughout the school year—running from September to June. What’s more, candidates must be at least 18 years old and be able to communicate in French.

Requirements and Responsibilities

The role isn’t just about waving a stop sign, though that is certainly part of it! Those interested must pass a satisfactory criminal record check and a vulnerable sector check. The job demands some physical stamina, as crossing guards will need to stand for around 45 minutes twice daily, holding a stop sign weighing about a pound at shoulder height for about a minute.

In addition, guards are tasked with observing their surroundings, reporting safety hazards, and ensuring children cross streets safely. This is in line with the responsibilities outlined by OnlineDegree.com, which explains that crossing guards are pivotal in preventing traffic accidents and maintaining traffic compliance.

  • Ensuring compliance with City Policy and Procedure
  • Discouraging unsafe behavior near traffic
  • Observing and reporting safety hazards
  • Regulating traffic using a Stop Sign
  • Performing daily safety checks

The role has its challenges, but it’s incredibly rewarding to know you’re making a difference in children’s safety. As the community expands, and schools continue to grow, there’s a greater demand for crossing guards. The anticipated increase in school construction and student population underscores why this position is becoming more crucial. In fact, BayToday highlights this trend, emphasizing both the local need and the rewarding nature of the job.

How to Apply
