Today is the 7th of March, 2026, and we’re excited to share an inspiring story from the STEMSEAS program, which is turning the tide for underrepresented students in science. Funded by the National Science Foundation, STEMSEAS (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Student Experiences Aboard Ships) provides unique opportunities for students to experience research aboard ships. This program is particularly targeted at those who may not have had access to such experiences before, allowing them to explore their interests in STEM fields while significantly reducing costs.

Recently, Jeanette deCuba, a doctoral candidate in Earth Sciences at Binghamton University, embarked on her first ship journey aboard the RV Atlantis, a U.S. Navy research vessel. This expedition, which took place from February 2 to 9, transported participants from Panama City to Tampa, Florida, offering invaluable hands-on experience in oceanographic research. During her time on the ship, deCuba served as a “Near-Peer Mentor,” engaging with students from various academic backgrounds, including the humanities, and helping them clarify their career paths.

Exploring New Horizons

The STEMSEAS program typically offers 6-10 day exploratory experiences that immerse students in geoscience and oceanography activities. With most expenses covered, including travel and living costs, participants face minimal financial barriers. Eligibility requirements specify that applicants must be U.S. citizens, 18 years or older, and enrolled in an accredited college or university. Notably, non-STEM students from fields such as English, Education, Art, and Journalism are encouraged to apply, fostering a diverse learning environment.

The application process is straightforward, requiring a completed application form, an unofficial transcript, and a recommendation from a professor or employer. Finalists are contacted 8-10 weeks prior to their chosen cruise, which focuses on exploratory activities rather than predefined research projects. This flexibility allows students to engage in sample collection and data generation while adapting to the unique challenges of life at sea, including the potential for seasickness, especially during the first few days.

Mentorship and Community

During her voyage, deCuba not only learned about the technology and research methods used on board but also gained insights into teaching and mentoring. Her advisor, Professor Adriane Lam, encouraged her to apply for this opportunity, emphasizing the importance of such experiences in shaping students’ professional trajectories. DeCuba highlighted how the opportunity to connect with peers and mentors has been crucial for students as they navigate their academic and career choices.

STEMSEAS is more than just a program; it’s a lifeline for students who might otherwise feel disconnected from the scientific community. The initiative aims to demystify the world of research and help students understand various career paths within the field. As deCuba reflects on her time aboard the RV Atlantis, she notes that these experiences can profoundly influence students’ decisions about their futures.

A Broader Impact

The importance of effective science communication and community engagement cannot be overstated. Initiatives like the CZS STEM Impact School complement programs like STEMSEAS by equipping researchers with the skills needed for impactful communication. This program focuses on developing individual communication and impact plans, fostering interdisciplinary networking, and offering resources to help scientists convey their work effectively to the public.

With STEMSEAS and programs like the CZS STEM Impact School, the future of science education looks bright. As we encourage more students to explore the wonders of STEM, we can look forward to a more inclusive and innovative scientific community.
